Watchmen (2019)Created by Damon LindelofThe graphic novel "Watchmen" is close to my heart – it's one of the first graphic novels I read in the early 2000s when I was getting into these things, and in 2005, a copy of the book was the first thing I bought with my very first salary after I started working. I enjoyed Zack Snyder's 2009 movie adaptation (there were some inconsistencies though, and I would have loved for them to have stuck to the original ending) as well. So, I was thinking, what was the point of adapting it again to a TV series?Later I realised that this show is not an adaptation of the book, but a story set 34 years after the events of the original. The story follows Detective Angela Abar a.k.a. Sister Night (Regina King) uncovering a conspiracy in 2019 Tulsa, Oklahoma, involving the Seventh Kavalry (a radical cult following a twisted Rorschach ideology). So far there are six episodes that have been released (I actually signed up for Hotstar just for this show), and they've all been very good. The show is actually pushing it better with each episode, the characters, the ideas are all very well done. And I'm really glad they're taking off from the book (I was overjoyed when I saw squid references in the first episode). The atmosphere and worldbuilding is awesome. This 2019 feels like our world, but at the same time you know there's something off – for instance, none of the characters use mobile phones like we do, no cameras, no internet and computers like we have. I guess things kind of evolved differently in this world. The superb music score by Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross has to be mentioned, it hugely complements the show.I drew Angela Abar, the drawing was done with @staedtlermars ballpoint pens on A6 sketchbook (new one – Arto by Campap is the brand), and scanned.#dailymoviesketch #watchmen#501 / 27-Nov-19

[500TH DRAWING ON @DAILYMOVIESKETCH]Avengers: Endgame (2019)Directed by Joe and Anthony RussoFor the 500th drawing on this page I thought I would do something special. Initially I had the idea to draw Tony Stark’s Snap from “Endgame”, but then once this scene was released I thought I'd draw this instead. On the recently launched Disney+ network, a set of deleted scenes from “Avengers: Endgame” was released. This one is set in the soul world (the same one where we saw Thanos and child Gamora at the end of “Avengers: Infinity War”), where Morgan Stark (“13 Reasons Why”’s Katherine Langford) meets her father Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr). Tony questions whether the decision he made at the end of “Endgame” was right. She assures him that it was the right one, and says that she loves him, to which he replies, “I love you 3000” echoing what she said to him as a kid many years ago. I thought it was a really nice and touching moment and so I picked this to draw.I can understand why the scene was cut from the movie, maybe, in an already busy 3 hour film, they couldn't fit it in seamlessly. But it’s a nice scene nonetheless. The drawing was done with @staedtlermars ballpoint pens and Gelly Roll pen on A6 Brustro sketchbook and scanned.Incidentally, the 400th drawing on this account was also from “Avengers: Endgame”, and was a drawing of Tony Stark, from the very first trailer for the movie (December last year), when the title of the movie was revealed. On this note I’m also really happy to reach this milestone — a big thank you to everyone who has followed, encouraged and supported my work here for the past three and a half years!#dailymoviesketch#ballpointpen #avengers #avengersendgame #penandink #handdrawn #inksketch#morganstark #tonystark #robertdowneyjr #katherinelangford #iloveyou3000#500 / 20-Nov-19

John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum (2019)Directed by Chad StahelskiIf you have been following my posts for some time, you may know that I don't like censorship of movies. I especially get annoyed when our overly sensitive Indian Censor Board makes cuts to movies when they are already rated "A". Why does a movie already certified to be for Adults only need to be cut? Also, I don't like the idea of people getting overly sensitive about the content in certain movies. Thankfully, we get uncensored content on Netflix and other streaming services, but there are groups of people looking to censor that too. With this thought and in conversation with a couple of friends, I had this idea to do a series of sketches showing or rather celebrating films with adult content, especially things that would get censored. This is one of them, showing a scene that was cut in the version that we saw in India – where John Wick stabs a guy in the eye. I'll do more of these, and will tag them as #uncensored. You can see this uncut scene on YouTube too.Without a doubt, "John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum" is one of the best films of 2019. The movie has got standout action scenes that are brilliantly done and very artistic, so, just dismissing them as adult content and cutting them, I feel is a big disservice to the movie. People get shot, stabbed and otherwise killed off in very creative ways, that will leave you with a huge grin on your face. I'm actually glad that most of the violence survived uncut (censorship in other countries could be probably worse), but I'm still annoyed that they cut it after rating it "A". To be clear, violence in real life isn't good. But in movies, I say, bring it on, the stronger the better! Filmmakers should have the right to show whatever they want, and it should be up to the audience to decide whether they like it or not.The drawing was done with 0.5mm 2B pencil in a one inch square size on a sketchbook gifted by @dear.artsie and scanned. This is drawing number 499 on this page. Next up – the 500 milestone! I have something special planned.#dailymoviesketch #johnwick #johnwickmovie @johnwickmovie#pencil#499 / 17-Nov-19

[Drawing of @rebeccaferguson__ from @flanaganfilm's @doctorsleepmovie]Doctor Sleep (2019)Directed by Mike FlanaganIn the past few years, a standout work of Mike Flanagan's has been "The Haunting of Hill House", which I really loved, so I was excited that he was bringing the sequel to "The Shining" to the big screen. "The Shining" is a classic horror film, and a classic Stanley Kubrick film (probably more associated with Kubrick than Stephen King, who apparently initially didn't like the adaptation of his work). Flanagan's task was to make a sequel to the Kubrick movie and also an adaptation of Stephen King's sequel novel, "Doctor Sleep", in a way that would appeal to all parties. I think he succeeded here! I watched the movie last Friday and enjoyed it.The story follows Danny Torrance (Ewan McGregor) years after the events of the first film. He is living a life in the small town of Frazier, New Hampshire. There is a cult called The True Knot, led by Rose The Hat (Rebecca Ferguson) who feast on those with Shining powers, and they are drawn to a teenager Abra (Kayleigh Curran). She reaches out to Danny for help and they have to stop The True Knot.I really liked the movie. I appreciated that they carried forward the story, but did their own thing in not trying to cheaply ape the original (though one would find lots of references). While I didn't find this movie scary, it rather maintained a creepy atmosphere throughout. I thought Flanagan's voice, similar to some of the dramatic tones of Hill House came through here, it's a more character driven piece. The two ladies' performances – Rebecca Ferguson and Kayleigh Curran – I thought were outstanding. The music set the tone too and I liked the cinematography and visuals. They went to painstaking lengths to recreate the original film's sets, and that care shows. Recap "The Shining" before you see this, but it's a recommended watch for me.I drew Rose The Hat, the drawing was done with @staedtlermars ballpoint pens on A6 Brustro sketchbook and scanned.#DailyMovieSketch#doctorsleep #theshining #rosethehat#ballpointpen #handdrawn#penandink #inksketch#498 / 14-Nov-19

Terminator: Dark Fate (2019)Directed by Tim MillerThe first two Terminator movies – "The Terminator" (1984) and "Terminator 2: Judgment Day" (1991) are undeniable classics. There were three sequels that were not so well received (my opinion of those were that they were interesting but forgettable). "Dark Fate" is now an attempt to reboot the franchise with James Cameron returning to it. It is a direct T2 sequel, with "Deadpool"'s Tim Miller coming on board to direct. I watched it last week. The story is kind of a T2 retelling – you have an augmented soldier Grace (Mackenzie Davis) sent back in time to present day, to protect Dani (Natalia Reyes), with a new model Terminator, a REV-9 (Gabriel Luna) trying to kill her. Sarah Connor (Linda Hamilton) and the old model T-800 Terminator (Schwarzenegger) figure in the plot as well.So how does this film that's touted as the "best sequel since T2" fare? Unfortunately, in my opinion, it wasn't all that better than T3, Salvation and Genisys. It's certainly slick, with good production values and action scenes. The acting was also strong. But to me it wasn't memorable. I also wasn't convinced by the T-800's character arc, the villain at times felt too human, the future dystopia I felt was kind of ill defined. That's just me, your experience may vary, I still feel it's worth watching.Did anyone else notice that the version released in India had very less swearing? There seemed to be some words that were dubbed over. I don't think our guys did it, I think the filmmakers themselves made a more toned down version for release in some countries. This was annoying, resulting in an already tame barely R-rated movie coming to a U/A rating in India.I drew the REV-9 in it's skeleton form. The drawing was done with Bic ballpoint pen (and a bit of Gelly Roll) on A6 Brustro sketchbook and scanned.#DailyMovieSketch #terminator#terminatordarkfate#ballpointpen#497 / 9-Nov-19

Assault on Precinct 13 (1976)Directed by John CarpenterAfter watching "Kaithi" which had a story track with gangsters laying siege to a police station, I wanted to watch this movie. I had seen it several years ago but didn't really remember it, so I watched it today (there's a HD upload on YouTube). The setup for the film is interesting — the bulk of the film is set in a police station due to be closed down, with only a skeleton crew available. A bus carrying three criminals has to stop at the station. When a gang called "Street Thunder" 'marks' the station and moves in for the kill, it's up to the few people inside to make a stand. It's an entertaining action thriller, running just at a little over 90 minutes. Carpenter was homaging the Western and the zombie movie, and for his second big screen outing it's a very well made movie. It was made on a budget of just $150,000 but it looks bigger than that.I love the music score for the movie and today discovered a disco version of the theme on YouTube as well, which I've been listening to on repeat! The movie has one of the few instances in film depicting a little girl getting shot — which is what I drew. [Drawing of @karthi_offl from @dir_lokeshkanagaraj's #Kaithi]Kaithi a.k.a. Kaidhi (2019)Directed by Lokesh KanagarajI had seen Lokesh Kanagaraj's earlier "Maanagaram" on Amazon Prime a couple of years back, it was really good, well directed with a terrific screenplay. So, I was interested in watching this, his second movie. I watched the Telugu dubbed version on Thursday night. The movie opens with a drug bust, with cops seizing almost a ton of cocaine and stashing it away in a secret location. The gangsters are now after the lives of some key officers and manage to poison the entire unit. Cop Vijay (Narain) takes the help of the titular prisoner Dilli (Karthi) to drive a lorry to take the officers to safety. There are moles in either camp, so Dilli has to deal with roadblocks every now and then, and meanwhile the gangsters are also laying siege to a police station, trying to break out one of their own. This was a fantastic thriller. I absolutely loved it. The screenplay and direction are stellar again, keeping you on edge throughout. There are always at least two suspenseful situations unfolding throughout the length of the movie. It's tightly edited and wastes no time, even the opening credits unfold during a tense scene. The performances are great (especially Karthi's nuanced acting effortlessly switching between silent intensity and emotional beats). One novelty here is that the entire film is set at night (in "Maanagaram", one of the stylistic choices they made was not to reveal the character names of the protagonists to the audience at all). There are some mass action scenes that I felt were a bit at odds with the gritty realism of the rest of the movie but that's again a choice so can't be faulted. The hordes of faceless thugs give off a zombie horror / John Carpenter-esque / Precinct 13 vibe. The badass music score and cinematography complement the film very well. Overall, a must watch! I drew Karthi as Dilli from the movie.
