[#DrawWithMango × #DailyMovieSketch]Face/Off (1997)Directed by John WooThe penultimate drawing for @mangopenciler's #90snostalgia Art Challenge. Since a new theme is going to be announced tomorrow, I thought I'd get my last couple of entries done. I initially planned to do 10 drawings, one sketch of a movie from every year in the decade. However I'm now doing 9, and would post a collage of all of them. This is the John Woo film "Face/Off" from 1997, the movie about an FBI agent swapping faces with a dangerous terrorist! It's an entertaining action movie and probably the most John Woo-esque movie among the Hollywood movies he has made.I have a lot of memories associated with this movie. At around this time I discovered the works of John Woo (watched A Better Tomorrow, The Killer, Hard Boiled, etc). In this year, I even wrote an article about his movies (mind you, no internet then) for a college magazine (which didn't get published, but it was fun working on it). I did sketches of the movie and was a fan of its style and action.Apparently the movie was initially pitched as a science fiction action movie set in the future but after Woo came on board, it was changed to the present day, as the mechanics of the face swap weren't important, and Woo wanted to explore what would happen if a cop and a criminal swap identities. It's a lot of fun and I definitely should rewatch this one.I drew the face of John Travolta during the face swap procedure (since the movie didn't employ any computer generated effects, the crew actually built latex replicas of the two actors' bodies with detachable faces!) The drawing was done with @ns1pen and Bic multi colour ballpoint pen on A6 @brustro sketchbook and scanned. Coming up next — a movie from 1999. One of my all time favourite movies ever.#faceoff #johntravolta #nicolascage #johnwoo #ballpointpen #inksketch #ns1pen#433 / 31-Mar-19

Us (2019)Directed by Jordan PeeleI was looking forward to watch @jordanpeele's second feature, "Us", after his extremely strong debut "Get Out" (which I rewatched on @netflix_in the previous day). It's on my Anticipated Movies artwork, which I got printed on a t-shirt – I brought that to office on Thursday and wore it for the movie. I was glad that "Us" got released in theatres here. The movie as you could make out from the trailers is about the Wilson family going to Santa Cruz beach for a vacation, where they encounter strange doppelgangers of themselves, who are apparently out to do them harm. "Us" is an extremely well made horror thriller. It has got great cinematography (by Michael Gioulakis – cinematographer for "It Follows" and "Glass"), a standout music score by Michael Abels – it's his second movie score, after "Get Out", and what unnerving music it is, fantastic acting (Lupita Nyong'o is in particular amazing), and well crafted suspense scenes. The criticism I had about "Us" was that when the movie gave us explanations as to what was going on, it seemed too out-there to be plausible, and it raised many questions to which there weren't satisfactory answers in my opinion. But, like many other great movies, it makes you think and you certainly won't forget it after leaving the theatre. "Get Out" also, for me, worked better the second time, so I should watch this movie again. At any rate, one should appreciate it's originality. Overall I liked the movie and would definitely recommend it.I drew Lupita Nyong'o as "Red" (the doppelganger of Adelaide) from the movie, the drawing was done with Bic ballpoint pen and Gelly Roll pen on A6 @Brustro sketchbook and scanned.#dailymoviesketch #usmovie #us #jordanpeele #lupitanyongo #red #adelaide #tethered #doppelganger#ballpointpen #inksketch#432 / 29-Mar-19

[#DrawWithMango × #DailyMovieSketch]From Dusk Till Dawn (1996)Directed by Robert RodriguezThis is the seventh drawing I'm doing for @mangopenciler's #90snostalgia Art Challenge. I initially wanted to do a sketch of one movie for every year of the decade, however, now I think I will close it at 9 entries, so that I can make a 3×3 collage. "From Dusk Till Dawn" is one of my favourite 'guilty pleasure' movies of all time. It's a B-movie, with A-quality star cast and screenplay and is very entertaining. Special make up effects man Robert Kurtzman (the K in KNB EFX Group) had the idea for the story, he asked Quentin Tarantino to write a screenplay around it, and the movie was directed by Robert Rodriguez. It made a star of George Clooney, and also cemented Salma Hayek's star status in the 90s.The movie stars Clooney and Tarantino as Seth and Richard Gecko, two criminals on the run, they kidnap a preacher and his family and set to cross the Texas Border. At night, they stop at a bar called the Titty Twister, only to discover that it's a vampire den, and they have to battle it out till dawn. This is one half crime movie, and one half vampire movie, and complete entertainment. I remember watching this when younger, I was so caught up with the style of it all, I reminisce about reading the screenplay in HTML format as well, enjoying the dialogue, and the action scenes, the comedy and the gore and splatter. The movie has a fantastic soundtrack, and one unforgettable scene with Salma Hayek dancing to "After Dark" by Tito & Tarantula, with a snake on her body (apparently she did this despite her phobia!). I drew Salma as Santanico Pandemonium (what a name) from the movie, this was done with Bic multi colour ballpoint pen and Gelly Roll pen on A6 @brustro sketchbook and scanned.#fromdusktilldawn #quentintarantino #salmahayek #tarantinoverse #robertrodriguez #santanicopandemonium#ballpointpen #inksketch#431 / 28-Mar-19

Rick and Morty (2013-present)Created by Justin Roiland and Dan Harmon “Nobody exists on purpose, nobody belongs anywhere, everybody's going to die, come watch TV.” A few days ago, I started re-watching episodes of this brilliant and darkly funny show on @netflix_in. I am a huge fan of the show and love the very clever writing, the bizarre and insane ideas, and the central two characters. Some months ago, the show won an Emmy Award for Outstanding Animated Program, for the Season 3 episode “Pickle Rick”. Can't wait for Season 4, which should hopefully air sometime this year.I drew Rick Sanchez from the show, the drawing was done with Bic multi colour ballpoint pens on A6 @brustro sketchbook and scanned.#dailymoviesketch #rickandmorty #rick #ricksanchez#ballpointpen #inksketch#430 / 25-Mar-19

Stranger Things 3 (2019)Created by The Duffer BrothersThe trailer for the upcoming Season 3 of "Stranger Things" was released a few days ago — what a day for trailers, as we also got trailers for "John Wick Chapter 3: Parabellum" and "Once Upon a Time in Hollywood" as well.Like the second season, which was called "Stranger Things 2" (not Season 2, simply 2, like a sequel to a movie), this is called "Stranger Things 3". It's set in July 1985 and the characters seem to be up against more monsters. They didn't reveal much in the trailer, and I'm looking forward to July, when the episodes are going to be released.I drew Millie Bobby Brown as Eleven from the trailer. The drawing was done with Bic multi colour pen – the black and red colours. I went a bit overboard with the shading so I had to use Gelly Roll also on this. This was drawn on an A6 @brustro sketchbook and scanned. Thanks to those who joined the Instagram Live Video I did while drawing this!#dailymoviesketch #strangerthings #strangerthings3 #eleven #milliebobbybrown#ballpointpen #inksketch #pen #ballpoint #karthikabhiram#429 / 23-Mar-19

LOVE DEATH + ROBOTS (2019)Created by Tim MillerThis project, "Love, Death & Robots" is an anthology comprising 18 short adult animated films, encompassing a variety of styles and themes largely in the science fiction and horror genres. After seeing the trailer I was really looking forward to this. The project is from "Deadpool"'s Tim Miller and Executive Producer David Fincher (he was at one time attached to a "Heavy Metal" project, wasn't he? This feels like it has evolved from that idea). I love anthologies, and I initially thought this would be a movie, like "The ABCs of Death", but it's presented as a series of 7 to 15 min episodes. I binged this on Saturday and enjoyed it a lot.It reminded me in some ways of "The Animatrix", an anthology of "The Matrix" universe shorts. While that was primarily from Japanese creators, this is from US and European artists. Tim Miller's own Blur Studio has made a couple of the shorts.I enjoyed the stories and the visual styles. Some of the episodes have such photorealistic animation, with stunning detail (human faces though, still have that "uncanny valley" effect). It reminded me of Animatrix's "Final Flight of the Osiris". If there's one criticism I had, it's that they didn't push the boundaries as much as they could have, what with the promotions calling it an NSFW work. While the episodes do have violence, swearing and nudity, it isn't anything more than what you'd find a similar 18+ audience specific Netflix show. Some of the episodes are predictable and feel familiar, but all are interesting to watch. Overall, science fiction fans would definitely want to check it out. This sketch is of the lead character from the segment "The Witness". This episode is set in Hong Kong. For the past few years, I've been following several Instagrammers who post pictures from there. So, though I've never been to HK, the buildings seemed familiar to me!This sketch was done with two Bic multi colour ballpoint pens, one with the standard red, blue, green, black colours, the other with purple, light blue, pink and lime green. It was drawn on an A6 @Brustro sketchbook and scanned.#428 / 20-Mar-19

Sketchy Behaviour (2019)Directed by Neville ShahA few days ago, I watched this one hour comedy special on @primevideoin and enjoyed it. Written and performed by @kennethseb and @kanangill, it consists of sketch comedy segments. Some of them are actually pretty bizarre and I felt that is why the whole thing worked (besides, Kanan and Kenny are really funny people). My favourite segments were the meta one where Kenny breaks character, the Exorcism one and the creepy car ride. Funny stuff, do check it out.I drew Kanan Gill from the Exorcism sketch. The sketch was done with two multi colour Bic ballpoint pens — one of them being a traditional blue, black, red, green one and the other which I ordered from Amazon and was delivered yesterday, with pink, purple, light blue and lime green colours. I think I ended up using most of the colours on this. This was drawn on A6 @brustro sketchbook and scanned.I already drew Kenny a long time back so I thought to draw Kanan here.I did one more sketch with those pens, which I'll also be posting today.#sketchybehaviour #kanangill #kennysebastian #comedy #ballpointpen #bic #sketch #ink #427 / 20-Mar-19

Avengers: Endgame (2019)Directed by Joe and Anthony RussoWith just a little over 40 days to go for this movie's release, there was the final trailer and poster that dropped completely by surprise, a few days ago. @emergencyawesome and @newrockstars and several others have done breakdowns for the trailer, and have picked apart nearly every frame of the footage. You have to appreciate the marketing of this movie, apparently the trailers are based only on the first 15 minutes of the movie, and there have been only two trailers and a TV spot released. While they do contain enough wow moments to build interest, they don't reveal details about the plot. Also, we really don't know if there was some footage shot only for the trailer that won't actually appear in the movie.April 26 can't get here fast enough!I drew Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow from the trailer. There are different hairstyles that you see for her in the trailer (the short blond hair, which means that takes place directly after Infinity War, longer hair, red hair and in a braid), which might indicate passage of time. I drew her with the braid. The drawing was done with Bic 0.7 multi colour pen and Gelly Roll pen on A6 @brustro sketchbook and scanned.#avengers #endgame #avengersendgame #avengersendgametrailer #blackwidow #whateverittakes#pen #ballpointpen #inksketch#426 / 16-Mar-19
