Kate (2021)Directed by Cedric Nicolas-TroyanI watched this action movie on Netflix a couple of days back and really liked it. Mary Elizabeth Winstead stars as the titular "Kate", an assassin in Tokyo, who is poisoned and has less than a day to live. She sets off on a path to find the Yakuza boss who poisoned her and to take revenge. I thought it was really nicely done, with a relatively simple story, a good pace, nice visuals and interesting characters. Most importantly, the action scenes were very well done. This isn't surprising as this is an 87North Productions (formerly 87Eleven) film, and they did the "John Wick" movies, "Atomic Blonde" and "Nobody", so the stunts and action are brutal, and are filmed in such a manner that you can clearly make out what's going on.I drew Mary Elizabeth Winstead from the movie, the drawing was done with Bic ballpoint pens on A5 notebook.I also wanted to post here about the other artwork that you see in the picture. I had ordered a physical copy of Utsav T R's (@derek_tingari) first comic book called "Solomon Antics: The Moon Hunters". As a surprise, he had also sent this portrait of me, done in his style (which is influenced by Bill Watterson and @skottieyoung). I felt extremely privileged to receive it and to me, it made the package worth so much more than what I paid for it. I had put it up on Story and since so many people appreciated it, I thought I would post it as well. I have used Utsav's artwork as my profile picture now.Swipe to see scanned versions of my "Kate" drawing and Utsav's artwork of me, and a few more pictures (last one is a filter that overlays an iPhone 13 box, discovered through @karlkolah’s Story ).#karthikabhiram #dailymoviesketch@apple #iphone12mini #shotoniphone#kateonnetflix #netflix #kate#ballpointpenart #ballpointpendrawing@cn3yan @netflix_in@instagram #hellofrom Hyderabad India #hellohyderabad #bornoninstagram #thisweekoninstagram#vsco #flatlay #flatlayindia#612 / 29-Sep-21

Alan Ayckbourn’s “Table Manners” by @storyboardproductionhouse I don’t have much exposure to plays or theatre, but yesterday, thanks to @saltandsambar, I went for this one at @rangbhoomispaces, and was very happy that I did! Directed by @sandeeptadi87 and featuring @aneeshadama @adityg6 @harsh_garg95 @dmahidhara @a.b.rastogi and Jonas David as the cast, it’s a dark comedy about six characters who come together for a family dinner one weekend. It’s apparently one of three plays by the writer called “The Norman Conquests”.Though the runtime was close to 2 hours, thanks to the terrific cast and crew, it didn’t feel at all like it was that long, and it was always engaging. They must have put a lot of effort into rehearsing every detail. The performances and timing was spot on, it didn’t feel like one was watching something being performed live and more like a properly edited film with the best takes of each scene. I really enjoyed it!Also! This is one thing I wasn’t expecting at all, and completely unrelated to the play itself — I was pleasantly surprised to hear the Finnish tune “Ievan Polkka” used in it. Just a few months back, I was ‘binging’ multiple versions of the song on YouTube. I had done a sketch of the “vibing cat” meme (where footage of a white cat shaking its head is superimposed on a video of street singer Bilal Goregen performing the song). While drawing it, I read about the actual song. There is a lovely a cappella version by the band Loituma, which was also used in the play.@saltandsambar and I stayed back to meet the cast and director. Got this selfie with the cast. The other photos aren’t great in quality due to digital zoom. There’s a video that shows the use of “Ievan Polkka”. The spaghetti photo is from @hyderamacafe, which is next to the venue. The group is doing a second performance today (Sunday 26 Sep) at the same venue, so, those interested can book tickets on @bookymshowin.#karthikabhiram@apple #iphone12mini #shotoniphone #vsco

Don't Breathe (2016)Directed by Fede AlvarezI watched both "Don't Breathe" and "Don't Breathe 2" recently and enjoyed them. The first movie I had seen back in 2016 when it was released and the second one is running in theatres now.The first movie was a fun, tense thriller with a group of young people invading the home of a blind army vet to steal some cash, only to discover that he is a very dangerous threat. For the most part it was a grounded movie but at points it does go off into more B-movie territory (one part in particular, you'll know when you see it). It's slickly made and enjoyable. The second movie seeks to expand the scope of the action so that it's not just confined to one location. I liked Part 2, but I felt that it kind of lessened the 'bite' or the viciousness of the Blind Man character, and his ability to use his blindness as an advantage over the invaders wasn't used enough. So, in my opinion the first was the superior film. But Part 2 is still worth watching and well made.Fede Alvarez made the 2013 remake "Evil Dead" which was a good movie. Both "Don't Breathe" movies were written by him and his "Evil Dead" writing partner Rodo Sayagues, Alvarez directed the first and Sayagues the second.I drew Stephen Lang as The Blind Man from the movie. This drawing was done with Bic ballpoint pens on A6 sketchbook. You can swipe to see a scanned version. #karthikabhiram #dailymoviesketch@apple #iphone12mini #shotoniphone#dontbreathe #dontbreathe2 #blindman #stephenlang#ballpointpen #ballpointpendrawing#611 / 25-Sep-21

Dramatic Sunset skies and buildings! A little while ago I was watching a YouTube video by @demas on phone photography where one of the tips he gave was to take multiple photos from the same spot, using the different lenses available on the phone. At Saturday’s Artist Meetup organised by @artartistofficial @udaymicroartist, the venue was a rooftop area (at @sacredearthcafe). So I took a few pictures of the views from high up, and this one in particular, I liked a lot, and I took pictures with both the normal lens and the ultra wide lens on the iPhone 12 Mini.I knew that I wanted to post both but was unsure of which one to lead with. Thanks to the responses on the poll, I’m putting the ultra wide picture first. The colours in the sky were beautiful, I tweaked them further while editing. The pictures were edited with @vsco using L6 preset. I normally don’t take that many sunset pictures, but on seeing the many images with beautiful colours on @shrusti_mohanty’s feed shot at that time, I was inspired to do the same.I’m also putting up the unedited photos in this post, you can see that I have not drastically altered the images.@apple #iphone12mini #shotoniphone@hellohyderabad #hellohyderabad @instagram #hellofrom Hyderabad India #thisweekoninstagram #bornoninstagram#karthikabhiram @karthikabhiram #sunset @vsco #vsco

Malignant (2021)Directed by James WanI watched director James Wan's latest film last week and enjoyed it a lot. Without getting into spoilers, the movie has Madison (Annabelle Wallis) who has visions of people dying at the hands of a mysterious killer. The movie starts off more or less like a traditional James Wan horror movie, but as it progresses, it turns into something else entirely! If one is expecting a very serious and grounded "Conjuring" type movie, one would likely be disappointed, it's good to keep an open mind and just go with the flow. As I was watching it, I felt they were intentionally embracing the absurd, and it turns out that is actually the case. For this one, Wan wanted to make an original horror movie with influences of 1980s low budget horror movies, 1970s/80s Italian giallo movies and more. It has all those grindhouse vibes, plus his own "Dead Silence" vibes (from memory, I have not seen it in a very long time), all done in a very slick, polished style. It's an odd combination and I at least appreciated that. The aggressive music in the opening titles and at certain points in the film (yes, that is a cover of Pixies' "Where is my Mind?", by Safari Riot feat. Grayson Sanders) reminded me of the Goblin themes from "Tenebrae", "Suspiria" and "Profondo Rosso". Appreciated the scares, the slick visuals, and the more outrageous violent "action" scenes. Definitely a recommended watch from me!At the meetup organised by @artartistofficial @udaymicroartist on 18th, there was Live sketching, so I started doing this ballpoint pen drawing of Annabelle Wallis from the movie. I finished it the next day and scanned it. I didn't get the likeness properly (and I also used Gelly Roll here a bit) but I'm still posting this, and I also used this to put up a Reel showing how I scan and edit my drawings.@apple #iphone12mini #shotoniphone#karthikabhiram #dailymoviesketch#ballpointpen #malignant#610 / 19-Sep-21

Attended an Artists Meetup today, organised by @artartistofficial @udaymicroartist at @sacredearthcafe. It was really nice to meet everyone who attended, there was Live sketching, Open Mic and after the meetup I listened to @soundofsarvam the band play live as well. An afternoon and evening well spent! For now I’m posting these two selfies I took, there are more pictures I shot on phone, I’ll post them too. #canon #200d #1018mm #karthikabhiram #meetup

The Office (2005-2013)Developed by Greg DanielsI mentioned in a previous post that @mangopenciler2.0, @tiny.sharma10 and I met up at @rad_art_1's @masterclassartacademy a few days back, and we each did sketches of @rainnwilson as Dwight Schrute from @theoffice.Here is my sketch of Dwight, it's from the episode where he puts on the face of a dummy and it makes him look really creepy. The drawing was done with Bic ballpoint pen on A5 Canson sketchbook. I already posted the scan of the image earlier but here it is again, and the last slide is a selfie taken on that day, which I couldn't post along with the 4:5 pictures. Hence, posting two pictures as a collage. The last two pictures were shot by @mangopenciler2.0 with his 50mm lens and show the drawing in progress.#theoffice #ballpointpen #dwightschrute@apple #iphone12mini #shotoniphone #vsco#karthikabhiram #dailymoviesketch#hellohyderabad#609 / 12-Sep-21
