Malignant (2021)Directed by James WanI watched director James Wan's latest film last week and enjoyed it a lot. Without getting into spoilers, the movie has Madison (Annabelle Wallis) who has visions of people dying at the hands of a mysterious killer. The movie starts off more or less like a traditional James Wan horror movie, but as it progresses, it turns into something else entirely! If one is expecting a very serious and grounded "Conjuring" type movie, one would likely be disappointed, it's good to keep an open mind and just go with the flow. As I was watching it, I felt they were intentionally embracing the absurd, and it turns out that is actually the case. For this one, Wan wanted to make an original horror movie with influences of 1980s low budget horror movies, 1970s/80s Italian giallo movies and more. It has all those grindhouse vibes, plus his own "Dead Silence" vibes (from memory, I have not seen it in a very long time), all done in a very slick, polished style. It's an odd combination and I at least appreciated that. The aggressive music in the opening titles and at certain points in the film (yes, that is a cover of Pixies' "Where is my Mind?", by Safari Riot feat. Grayson Sanders) reminded me of the Goblin themes from "Tenebrae", "Suspiria" and "Profondo Rosso". Appreciated the scares, the slick visuals, and the more outrageous violent "action" scenes. Definitely a recommended watch from me!At the meetup organised by @artartistofficial @udaymicroartist on 18th, there was Live sketching, so I started doing this ballpoint pen drawing of Annabelle Wallis from the movie. I finished it the next day and scanned it. I didn't get the likeness properly (and I also used Gelly Roll here a bit) but I'm still posting this, and I also used this to put up a Reel showing how I scan and edit my drawings.@apple #iphone12mini #shotoniphone#karthikabhiram #dailymoviesketch#ballpointpen #malignant#610 / 19-Sep-21
