Zodiac (2007)Directed by David FincherI had watched this movie several years before, but didn't properly appreciate it then – when someone mentioned it recently, I rewatched it last week on Netflix. I really enjoyed it and thought it was a brilliantly made film. The movie is based on a real life, unsolved case from the 1960s and 70s – that of the "Zodiac Killer" who claimed responsibility for a number of murders, and sent evidence to the police and newspapers. The film is based on a book written by San Fransisco Chronicle cartoonist Robert Graysmith on the case, and shows us the case investigation that happened through the points of view of Graysmith (played by Jake Gyllenhaal), reporter Paul Avery (Robert Downey Jr) and inspector Dave Toschi (Mark Ruffalo). It's a very well made movie, though close to three hours long, it keeps your interest throughout. The performances, script, cinematography, direction are all stellar and show a lot of attention to detail, as you'd expect from perfectionist Fincher. Some movies, you have to be in the right frame of mind to appreciate – which I guess was not the case when I saw it many years back, so I'm glad I re-watched the movie now. Highly recommended. At the time the movie was released, there was no Marvel Cinematic Universe – it's interesting to note that the three main leads are all MCU characters now – Mysterio, Iron Man, Hulk.I drew the Zodiac Killer from the movie, this was done with Uni Pin 0.1 fineliner on A6 Brustro sketchbook and scanned.#dailymoviesketch #karthikabhiram#penandink #unipin #fineliner #inksketch#zodiac #davidfincher #zodiackiller #mindhunter#475 / 29-Sep-19

Batman (1966)Directed by Leslie H Martinson “Some days, you just can’t get rid of a bomb!” It was Batman Day a couple of days ago (21 Sep I suppose — I didn’t know there was such a thing till I saw people posting about it), and I thought I’d post a Batman related sketch. Rather than go with drawing from the modern Batman movies, I thought I’d recall the 1966 movie (based on the 1966-68 TV show), which I haven’t seen in years but remember as being a lot of fun. That movie and show was completely played for laughs, including clever puns and a colourful and enjoyable approach to the material. This is a scene from the movie where Batman tries to get rid of a bomb.I drew it with multi colour ballpoint pens (Bic mostly but for the yellow, used another pen) and this is a scanned version.Recently on @thefakeadco and other places I’ve seen people add arrows pointing to elements of the @instagram interface to do clever things. While this may not be that creative I thought I’d attempt it as well. I’m posting the picture by itself on my @karthikabhiram account (that’s the one with the arrow pointing to real life elements). #dailymoviesketch #karthikabhiram #batman #batmanday #adamwest#batman1966 #bicpen #bic#ballpointpen #penandink #inksketch #flatlay @googlepixel @googleindia #teampixel#thefakeadco #trending #arrows #dankmemes #meme #memes#474 / 22-Sep-19

[Miniature drawing of @reginaacassandraa from #Evaru directed by @vvramg and starring @adivisesh]Evaru (2019)Directed by Venkat RamjiI missed watching this movie in theatres as the last couple of months have been extremely busy for me, with Recruitment activities. Fortunately, at the end of its theatrical run now, the film is on Amazon Prime. It's an official remake of the Spanish movie "Contratiempo" a.k.a. "The Invisible Guest", the second Indian remake, after "Badla". I actually didn't know this was a remake, till @kashyapchandra told me about it. So, I watched "The Invisible Guest" on Netflix recently and liked that. I haven't seen "Badla" yet and directly saw this take on the story. The film opens with wealthy socialite Sameera (Regina Cassandra) being arrested for the murder of a police officer who raped her. Subsequently, while under house arrest and impending trial, Vikram Vasudev (Adivi Sesh), a cop, advises her on defense. If you have seen the original film you would kind of know where things go from here, but the filmmakers here have made enough changes to differentiate this movie from the Spanish one (I don't know how similar this is to "Badla" though). The framework is the same, but they play about with the details differently. I thought "Evaru" was well done, quite restrained in its approach and nicely paced. It was well acted too. I liked the movie overall.I drew Regina Cassandra from the movie, from the flashback scene of the assault that starts off the story. The drawing is one inch square in size, done with 0.5 mm 2B mechanical pencil on A6 Brustro sketchbook and scanned.Tagging @neme.art #aninchaugust #aninchaugust2019 (despite August being over), and @primevideoin.#dailymoviesketch #karthikabhiram#pencil #pencilart #miniatureart #evaru#contratiempo #theinvisibleguest#473 / 20-Sep-19

Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of one Harley Quinn) (2020)Directed by Cathy YanSome days ago, a teaser for this movie was shown in theatres along with “It Chapter Two”. The teaser opens with red balloons floating upwards with music that makes it seem like a trailer for that film itself. But then Harley Quinn emerges from the shadows with a mallet and bursts the balloons saying, “I’m so fucking over clowns”. This movie with a very long title is an upcoming entry in the now kind of fractured DCEU, and is apparently the first R-Rated film in that series. I am keeping my expectations in check but anyway looking forward to it, especially for Margot Robbie, who was fantastic in “Suicide Squad”. I drew Harley from the teaser, this was drawn with 0.5mm 2B mechanical pencil and a Prismacolor red pencil on A6 Brustro sketchbook and scanned. It’s drawn in an inch square size, and although August is over, I’m still tagging this with #aninchaugust #AnInchAugust2019.#DailyMovieSketch #birdsofpreymovie#pencilart #miniatureart #harleyquinn#margotrobbie#472 / 17-Sep-19

The Boys (2019)Developed by Eric KripkeAs I wrote before, I watched this show a couple of weeks ago and really enjoyed it! A darkly funny take on superheroes, I didn't think I'd enjoy it this much. Apparently the show is actually tamer than the source material (the comic by Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson). I'm interested in reading it and also in the upcoming Season 2.Here is another drawing of Antony Starr as Homelander from the show. How this came about is — I had ordered a set of multi colour ballpoint pens from Amazon, and I had scribbled a bit with them in my sketchbook. I decided to cover it up with a black marker, the one I used had this purplish black ink, on which I sprayed fixative as well. So, on the other side of the paper there was this really nice texture that happened and I thought to draw something with white pen on it. So here it is. Done with Sakura Gelly Roll pen and scanned. I'm putting a B&W version as well.#dailymoviesketch #theboys @theboystv #homelander#penandink #gellyroll #471 / 15-Sep-19

It Chapter Two (2019)Directed by Andy MuschiettiI watched “It Chapter Two” last week and enjoyed it. I really liked the first movie, thanks to the atmosphere, the very polished look, the great performances by the actors and the story. It helped that I had watched the 1990 adaptation of the Stephen King book just before watching the 2017 movie, so I had a bit more context for the characters and I enjoyed it more. I was eagerly awaiting the sequel and to me, it did not disappoint. Chapter Two is set 27 years after the events of the first film, where Mike (Isaiah Mustafa) is the only one among the Losers Club still living in Derry, and when the evil entity who takes the form of Pennywise the Clown resurfaces, he gets his old friends back to Derry so that they can destroy It once and for all.At a running time of close to three hours, the movie takes its time with the story, but I liked it and never found it boring. Surprisingly, despite its length, it still felt like some plot threads were a bit rushed (the treatment of the Henry Bowers character, for example). The casting is very good, with the adult actors looking very much like their child counterparts. The young actors return as well for some flashback scenes, and apparently there was a bit of CGI de-aging done because the kids in real life look much older now. Bill Skarsgard as Pennywise is amazing as usual. The movie to me wasn't as scary as the first one. But it's recommended viewing as a conclusion to the story. You can spot director Andy Muschietti in the background in one shot, in the scene where Eddie visits a pharmacy. There is also one surprise cameo from a famous person which I'll mention in the first comment on this post.Today I caught up with some artist friends for brunch, and @dear.artsie was kind enough to give me a sketchbook and a set of colour gel pens. This drawing was made with those (though I did use a bit of Gelly Roll as well), and scanned.#DailyMovieSketch #it #itchapter2 #itchaptertwo #pennywise #billskarsgard#inksketch #penandink #gelpen#470 / 15-Sep-19

Saaho (2019)Directed by Sujeeth ReddyThis highly anticipated movie was released towards the end of August, and I watched it last weekend. I saw the Telugu version. The story involves an undercover cop, a master criminal, a syndicate of gangsters in the fictional Waaji City, and a MacGuffin called a "Black Box", and showcases some exciting big budget action sequences. The visuals are spectacular, and some of the action scenes were really well done. One must appreciate the attempt at pulling off something of this scale. However, I was disappointed by the movie overall. I didn't find the characters interesting or developed enough. I thought the story actually didn't have much depth to it, so, the convoluted storytelling and twists to jazz up the film didn't feel earned. The tone also was kind of uneven, the humour elements I felt didn't actually work. The cast and crew obviously put a lot of effort into it, and the movie is worth watching and supporting because of that. I just wish it'd have been a better one, deserving of all the hype.I drew Prabhas from the movie, the drawing was done with multi colour ballpoint pen and Gelly Roll pen on A6 Brustro sketchbook and scanned.I completed this drawing at yesterday's Open Studio Art Meetup at @living_quarter_hyd. The Boys (2019)Developed by Eric KripkeI watched this show last week and enjoyed it a lot! It's set in a world where superheroes exist, and imagines what it would be like if Corporations sponsor their activity. Karl Urban is Billy Butcher, who puts together a team to expose corrupt superheroes. Quite a cynical and satirical take on the material, the story is engaging and a lot of fun. The acting is good and the show is quite cinematic (presented in 2.39:1 aspect ratio). I actually didn't expect it to be this good. I enjoyed the very darkly funny approach, the strong violence, gore. I have not read the comic series it's based on, but apparently the show is quite tame compared to the source material! Not surprising since the comic was written by Garth Ennis, who wrote the Preacher series which I have read long ago, which pushed boundaries and was adults only stuff. This is a quick (literally — I think I did this in just 5 min) sketch of Antony Starr as Homelander from the show. It was done with a multi colour ballpoint pen on A6 Brustro sketchbook and scanned. I was thinking whether or not to scan and post this or not (as it was just a very quick drawing), but decided to go ahead anyway.#DailyMovieSketch #karthikabhiram #theboys #homelander #ballpointpen #inksketch #penandink #amazonprime#468 / 2-Sep-19
