[Drawing of @karthi_offl from @dir_lokeshkanagaraj's #Kaithi]Kaithi a.k.a. Kaidhi (2019)Directed by Lokesh KanagarajI had seen Lokesh Kanagaraj's earlier "Maanagaram" on Amazon Prime a couple of years back, it was really good, well directed with a terrific screenplay. So, I was interested in watching this, his second movie. I watched the Telugu dubbed version on Thursday night. The movie opens with a drug bust, with cops seizing almost a ton of cocaine and stashing it away in a secret location. The gangsters are now after the lives of some key officers and manage to poison the entire unit. Cop Vijay (Narain) takes the help of the titular prisoner Dilli (Karthi) to drive a lorry to take the officers to safety. There are moles in either camp, so Dilli has to deal with roadblocks every now and then, and meanwhile the gangsters are also laying siege to a police station, trying to break out one of their own. This was a fantastic thriller. I absolutely loved it. The screenplay and direction are stellar again, keeping you on edge throughout. There are always at least two suspenseful situations unfolding throughout the length of the movie. It's tightly edited and wastes no time, even the opening credits unfold during a tense scene. The performances are great (especially Karthi's nuanced acting effortlessly switching between silent intensity and emotional beats). One novelty here is that the entire film is set at night (in "Maanagaram", one of the stylistic choices they made was not to reveal the character names of the protagonists to the audience at all). There are some mass action scenes that I felt were a bit at odds with the gritty realism of the rest of the movie but that's again a choice so can't be faulted. The hordes of faceless thugs give off a zombie horror / John Carpenter-esque / Precinct 13 vibe. The badass music score and cinematography complement the film very well. Overall, a must watch! I drew Karthi as Dilli from the movie. The drawing was done with @staedtlermars ballpoint pens and a Gelly Roll pen on A6 Brustro sketchbook and scanned.#dailymoviesketch #kaithi #kaidhi #karthi #ballpointpen#495 / 3-Nov-19
