Bird Box (2018)Directed by Susanne BierA Netflix original film, this one is a post apocalyptic horror / thriller set in a time where much of humanity has been wiped out by creatures that cause people to kill themselves if they look at them. It's five years after the incident happened, and Malorie (SandraBullock) must get to a promised safe haven along with two children. Much of the film though is composed of flashbacks showing how this apocalypse happened. It's an interesting film but one definitely has a strong sense of deja vu through the whole thing. It reminded me of films like Zack Snyder's version of "Dawn of the Dead", "A Quiet Place", "The Walking Dead", and "28 Days Later". The film is definitely effective, the performances are good and the suspense and tension is quite nicely done. The music score is by Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross, and it's good as well.Overall it's worth watching but I don't think it's an extraordinary movie.I drew Sandra Bullock as Mallorie, with her blindfold. It was drawn with Bic ballpoint pen and blue colour pencil and scanned.#DailyMovieSketch #birdbox#408 / 30-Dec-18

Black Mirror: Bandersnatch (2018)Directed by David Slade This morning I watched "Black Mirror: Bandersnatch" on Netflix (doesn't it sound like a variation of Benedict Cumberbatch's name?). It's a Netflix Interactive Film (not an episode of the series though), which means there are choices you make during the presentation that guide the outcome. It is July 1984, and programmer Stefan (Fionn Whitehead) is working on a video game adaptation of a "choose your adventure" type book called "Bandersnatch" – something which may be causing him to lose a grip on reality. It's a novel concept and I thought it was very well done but the storyline (at least the three or so paths / endings that I saw) wasn't as engaging to me and didn't have a proper resolution like some other excellent "Black Mirror" episodes. Well, maybe there is one optimal path that presents the best overall storyline which one can discover on re-watch. There are apparently five different endings of the film and varying runtimes (the average is 90 min). Check online, people have already made flowcharts of the differing paths of the film. It's very much a "Black Mirror" film since there are references to earlier episodes in it. And it's very much a Netflix film as there are meta references to that as well. The production values are splendid as is par for any Black Mirror episodes – gorgeous cinematography (I did notice some shifting aspect ratios), production design evoking the 1980s feel, and the game itself seems authentic (they refer to fitting the entire game in 40K, which is as much space as old games had to use for everything – logic, graphics and sound). Definitely do check it out – it's certainly an experience. This is a quick sketch of the title image that comes on Netflix. I had actually scribbled a drawing on one page of my sketchbook which I was not happy with (swipe to see it), so I used a black marker to black it all out and I drew this with white gel pen. When scanned it produced all these vivid colours so I kept it in, and I made a B&W version, and a high contrast one as well. I'm also posting a picture of how the choices appear while watching the movie.#407 / 29-Dec-18

Reservoir Dogs (1992)Directed by Quentin TarantinoI know what you're thinking, there are no gorillas in "Reservoir Dogs", so how's this related? Well, this is actually based on the video for Harry Nilsson's "Coconut", the song that plays over the end credits of the movie. The video has three guys in gorilla suits playing music, one of them with an actual coconut.I actually wanted to draw this around Christmas time but was very busy with recruitment drives (till yesterday actually). This is because, "Reservoir Dogs" was the first Quentin Tarantino movie I saw, and it was at around this time in 1997, on STAR Movies back then. I liked the movie quite a bit, but it was probably over the next couple of years that I really grew to appreciate and love Tarantino's works. I am a huge fan of his movies and "Pulp Fiction" is one of my all time favourites. I love "Reservoir Dogs" as well – Tarantino's first film is funny, entertaining and very well made. My favourite scene was the one where Joe Cabot gives codenames to the Reservoir Dogs before their jewellery store robbery, which is never actually shown on screen. That was also the first time I heard this "Coconut" song and liked it a lot.#DailyMovieSketch #karthikabhiram #reservoirdogs #harrynilsson #coconut #putthelimeinthecoconut#406 / 29-Dec-18

Home Alone (1990) / Angels with Filthy SoulsDirected by Chris ColumbusCouldn't resist doing this drawing based on the fictional B&W gangster film within "Home Alone" — "Angels with Filthy Souls". Remember the line of dialogue, "Keep the change, ya filthy animal"? It seems they shot the one minute plus of footage on B&W film to mimic early gangster movies. The drawing was done with 0.3 and 0.8 pens on A6 Brustro sketchbook and scanned.#homealone #DailyMovieSketch #angelswithfilthysouls #keepthechangeyafilthyanimal #merrychristmas #christmas #405 / 26-Dec-18

Home Alone (1990)Directed by Chris ColumbusLast year for Christmas, I did a sketch based on "Die Hard", one of my favourite movies set during Christmas. Today, I was thinking on what to draw, and then I watched a Breakdown / Easter Eggs video of "Home Alone" by @eavoss for @newrockstars. So I decided to do a drawing based on this movie. It's been many years since I watched it, I think the last time would have been still in the VHS era! Should watch it again now and see how it holds up. But I'm sure many of us would have watched this movie many many times as kids and enjoyed it. The music score by John Williams is very memorable and so is the entire Christmas feel of this comedy.I drew Joe Pesci as Harry, the smarter half of the Wet Bandits, from the movie. This is from the third act of the movie where Kevin McCallister (Macaulay Culkin) defends himself from the burglars, dishing out quite a lot of damage (these Rube Goldberg-ish traps lead people to theorise that Kevin grows up to become the Jigsaw Killer from @creepypuppet's "Saw" movies). The drawing was done with ballpoint pen and @prismacolor pencil on A6 Brustro sketchbook and scanned.Merry Christmas everyone!#DailyMovieSketch #christmas #homealone #wetbandits #harry #404 / 25-Dec-18

Aquaman (2018)Directed by James WanThis movie was released in India a week in advance of its US release date, and I got to see it last Thursday (13-Dec-18). Watched it in 3D, managed to get the one Recliner seat when all other regular seats were booked! I had not planned this so I did not carry my t-shirt with my 2018 movies artwork, which I've worn for every movie I watched from that list! It was raining though and I got wet — for a movie about water, hopefully that counts.I was not sure whether I would like this movie or not. Jason Momoa as Arthur Curry / Aquaman is certainly an interesting character, and this movie gives us an origin story in flashbacks as well as a storyline involving King Orm (Patrick Wilson) trying to unite the different underwater kingdoms into waging war on the surface and wanting to become Ocean Master, Arthur must take his place as king so that this doesn't happen. The visuals in this movie are fantastic. There is no shortage of imagination here in all the underwater scenes and in the action sequences. It's worth seeing it for these alone. It's very entertaining and easy to watch. James Wan shows that he can handle this kind of superhero movie just as well as a big budget action spectacular ("Furious 7") and his earlier horror films ("The Conjuring"). The story I felt was rather familiar and nothing that we haven't seen done before. Some of the acting here and there was a bit dodgy as well, I thought, and ultimately this movie felt more like a standalone superhero movie than one that's part of a bigger shared Cinematic Universe. Granted, the DCEU isn't what it was anymore, but this felt like a step back in time to the 1990s or early 2000s, before shared universes were a thing (and not in a good way). There was perhaps one villain too many, as Black Manta didn't have much to do, the character could've been cut from the movie altogether.I drew Amber Heard as Mera from the movie, this was done with a black Bic and red Reynolds 045 ballpoint pen (remember those?) on A6 Brustro sketchbook and scanned.#aquaman #jasonmomoa #arthurcurry #amberheard #mera #DailyMovieSketch#403 / 17-Dec-18

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (2018)Directed by Bob Persichetti, Peter Ramsey and Rodney RothmanAmong the several screen adaptations of the Spider-Man character, this animated film from Sony Animation is certainly the most unique one, for many reasons. Free from the constraints of having to fit this into an existing Marvel movie Universe, the filmmakers seem to have done their own thing, which does lend itself to starting a franchise if it does well. The film has the involvement of Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, who did the two Jump Street movies and were behind "The Lego Movie". The film's storyline has teenager Miles Morales gaining super powers after getting bitten by a radioactive spider. An accident involving a collider experiment by the Kingpin results in multiple Spider-People being brought in to Miles' universe, and Miles has to take on the mantle of Spider-Man, and save the others. The movie was fantastic. It's great fun and definitely exceeded expectations. The visuals are spectacular, the action scenes are terrific, it has a great soundtrack. One of the biggest assets of this film though is its character development – we like Miles and the other Spider-People a lot, and hence we care what happens to them. The characters are treated with respect, and though there is a lot of humour, it comes naturally. The Kingpin on that note, was a bit underdeveloped (Vincent D'Onofrio's fantastic portrayal in the "Daredevil" TV show kind of filled the gaps for me). Very entertaining and highly recommended! I caught a 2D presentation. Lots of Easter Eggs and references are there, I spotted a poster for "From Dusk Till Shaun" (fictional sequel to "Shaun of the Dead"), the opening has references to Sam Raimi's movies, there was a logo for Backrub (Google's original name). The design of Miles's Dad is exactly like what John Romita Jr would draw, and B Bendis and S Ditko are in Miles's phone contacts. This drawing was done with Ballpoint pen and gel pen on paper and scanned.#402 / 16-Dec-18
