Aquaman (2018)Directed by James WanThis movie was released in India a week in advance of its US release date, and I got to see it last Thursday (13-Dec-18). Watched it in 3D, managed to get the one Recliner seat when all other regular seats were booked! I had not planned this so I did not carry my t-shirt with my 2018 movies artwork, which I've worn for every movie I watched from that list! It was raining though and I got wet — for a movie about water, hopefully that counts.I was not sure whether I would like this movie or not. Jason Momoa as Arthur Curry / Aquaman is certainly an interesting character, and this movie gives us an origin story in flashbacks as well as a storyline involving King Orm (Patrick Wilson) trying to unite the different underwater kingdoms into waging war on the surface and wanting to become Ocean Master, Arthur must take his place as king so that this doesn't happen. The visuals in this movie are fantastic. There is no shortage of imagination here in all the underwater scenes and in the action sequences. It's worth seeing it for these alone. It's very entertaining and easy to watch. James Wan shows that he can handle this kind of superhero movie just as well as a big budget action spectacular ("Furious 7") and his earlier horror films ("The Conjuring"). The story I felt was rather familiar and nothing that we haven't seen done before. Some of the acting here and there was a bit dodgy as well, I thought, and ultimately this movie felt more like a standalone superhero movie than one that's part of a bigger shared Cinematic Universe. Granted, the DCEU isn't what it was anymore, but this felt like a step back in time to the 1990s or early 2000s, before shared universes were a thing (and not in a good way). There was perhaps one villain too many, as Black Manta didn't have much to do, the character could've been cut from the movie altogether.I drew Amber Heard as Mera from the movie, this was done with a black Bic and red Reynolds 045 ballpoint pen (remember those?) on A6 Brustro sketchbook and scanned.#aquaman #jasonmomoa #arthurcurry #amberheard #mera #DailyMovieSketch#403 / 17-Dec-18
