Incredibles 2 (2018)Directed by Brad BirdPixar's "The Incredibles" is one of my favourite animated movies. I think it's a very well written and entertaining movie. When this sequel was announced (coming 14 years after the first), I was excited for it and I got to watch it on Sunday. The movie picks up immediately where the first film ended. In the fictional 1960s world of the movie, superheroes (called "Supers" here) are outlawed. Businessman Winston Deavor (voiced by Bob Odenkirk who plays Saul Goodman in "Breaking Bad" and "Better Call Saul") has a plan though, to influence world leaders to vote to make Supers legal again. This involves getting Helen / Elastigirl back into action, meaning that Bob Parr / Mr Incredible has to look after his kids. While this is going on, there's a new villain who surfaces – the mysterious Screenslaver, who hypnotises people though broadcast signals.I absolutely loved this movie. It's so entertaining and brilliantly animated. The visuals are splendid, and like the first movie, it's not just for kids, it's well written and takes the characters and the world building very seriously. Like the first, this is what a family oriented world of "Watchmen" would be like. There is a lot of fun to be had here, and emotional moments are always capped off with a bit of humour, which I thought was balanced very well. Michael Giacchino's James Bond-esque music score is superb too. The only criticism I have is that the villain's plotline is rather predictable, and you will have it figured out and wonder why Elastigirl did not. But that doesn't take away from the enjoyment of the film.My favourite character was the baby Jack Jack, and he has a lot more screen time here compared to Part 1, and he absolutely steals the show whenever he is on screen. He is probably the most powerful Super, with many abilities (we saw some in Part 1). I drew him – the sketch was done with my 0.5mm 2B pencil on Brustro sketchbook and scanned. The official title of this movie is "Incredibles 2" (no "The"). #356 / 4-Jul-18#dailymoviesketch #incredibles2 #theincredibles #incredibles #jackjack #pixar #disney #pencil #pencilart

Yesterday I attended this event called "Lighter Inside", which was an Art and Music Carnival in support of Mental Health. I exhibited some of my @dailymoviesketch artworks there and had a great time meeting other artists and the people who attended the event. Thank you @abhinayaiyer_ for inviting me. That morning I watched "Incredibles 2" and it was a fantastic movie. So, I drew Jack Jack from the movie at the event. This is actually part of a larger illustration that @i.am.not.an.artist_ did, based on one of the poems recited at the event. I drew the birds on the right and left of the picture as well. Jack Jack is probably out of place in this piece but then again since my theme was movies, I think it works as my contribution to the event as a whole. The last picture was taken by @_gareeb.architect_. #vsco #google #pixel2xl #teampixel #hellohyderabad #incredibles2 #jackjack

Logan's Run (1976)Directed by Michael AndersonIt has been a while since I posted a sketch here as I had been travelling. A little while ago, @ampposters posted an artwork based on this movie, and I watched it a few days back. The movie is loosely based on the book of the same name, and depicts the future society of the year 2274. Humans live a carefree lifestyle in a huge domed city, completely cut off from the outside world and are permitted to live only up to the age of 30. Once they reach their Last Day, they participate in a ritual called "Carrousel", where they give up their lives voluntarily, hoping that some of them are selected for renewal. Those who do not accept this limit are called Runners, and Sandmen are the police force who keep them in check. Michael York plays a Sandman, Logan 5, who is tasked with finding the Runners' "Sanctuary", and becomes a Runner himself. The setup is intriguing and the movie sounds more interesting than it actually is. A lot of the movie involves people going from one place to another, and it seems quite dated to me. Some of the visuals though were splendid, the production and set design are great and I liked the cinematography too. Overall it was a good movie though obviously not for everyone. It's a mix of science fiction and 1960s/70s disco aesthetic! If that sounds good to you, do watch. This is a sketch of one of the attendees of the "Carrousel", showing off the crazy costume design. Done with 0.5mm 2B and @Prismacolor pencils and scanned. The colour has bled a little into the paper due to the fixative I sprayed on it I guess.#355 / 1-Jul-18#logansrun #dailymoviesketch #pencil #pencilart

Kong: Skull Island (2017)Directed by Jordan Vogt-RobertsI missed this movie when it came out in theatres, saw it a few days ago on Amazon Prime. This is the second entry in Legendary Pictures' "MonsterVerse", after 2014's "Godzilla" (I remember that movie was pretty good, though I don't remember the movie itself and just watched this one as a standalone film). The story concerns Randa (John Goodman) from the Monarch Corporation, who travels to an uncharted and hidden island along with a team of scientists and soldiers, and discovers monsters. The seismic charges they drop to map the island wake up Kong – who is king on the island, but also a bigger threat. The movie I thought was very entertaining. It was a lot better than I expected. The actors all did a good job, the production design (Futura typeface used in the movie and in the credits) was aesthetic, the cinematography (by Larry Fong, who shot "300", "Watchmen", "Batman v Superman") was great. I enjoyed the look of the movie, with its saturated yellows and greens. There were some showoffy camera moves and shots which were also nicely pulled off. I liked the music choices too. The visual effects were also terrific. The only criticism I have is that the story is rather straightforward (there's a setup and the movie follows through, nothing really unexpected or out of the ordinary). But that doesn't take away from the overall experience. Well worth watching.I drew Brie Larson as Mason Weaver, the photojournalist who joins the expedition. The camera she uses in the film is apparently a rare Leica KE-7A military version. From what I could see online it either has a 50mm f2 or a 35mm f2.8 lens. The drawing was done with my 0.5mm 2B pencil on Brustro sketchbook and scanned.#354 / 19-Jun-18#dailymoviesketch #kong #kingkong #kongskullisland #skullisland #brielarson #captainmarvel #leica #pencilart #pencil

A couple of weekends ago, I did a Live Video on Instagram of me drawing a picture, and during that time, one of the viewers suggested doing a flip through of my sketchbook. So I thought I would do that, and here it is. These are all the recent sketches I have done for my @dailymoviesketch account. It includes one sketch that I never completed because I wasn't happy with the way it was turning out. This is split into two videos due to Instagram's one minute time limit. The video was filmed with my @madebygoogle Pixel 2 XL and edited with VSCO. I am posting this on both my accounts, @karthikabhiram and @dailymoviesketch. #vsco #madebygoogle #pixel2xl #teampixel #dailymoviesketch

The Girl in the Spider's Web (2018)Directed by Fede AlvarezThe trailer for the follow up to David Fincher's 2011 adaptation of Stieg Larsson's "The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo" was released recently. I was a fan of the original, and liked the Swedish adaptations of the "Millennium Trilogy" as well. The heroine, Lisbeth Salander played by Noomi Rapace in the Swedish films and Rooney Mara in Fincher's adaptation is a very interesting character. For quite some time, there was no word on a sequel to Fincher's movie. Now we have this adaptation of the novel by David Lagercrantz, directed by Fede Alvarez (director of 2013's "Evil Dead" and "Don't Breathe"). It stars Claire Foy as Lisbeth. The trailer was good, and I thought they did a very good job of emulating the look established by Fincher. Of course, I am sure Alvarez will bring his style to it. I'm looking forward to watching the movie when it's released in November.I hope it will be released theatrically here – unlike the first movie which didn't get a theatre release because the studio was unwilling to censor some of the more disturbing scenes in the movie. My opinion is always that movies should be released uncut if they have an "A" certificate, because that certification itself means that only adults are supposed to watch it.I drew Claire Foy as Lisbeth from a scene in the trailer. The drawing was done with 0.5mm 2B pencil and @prismacolor pencils on Brustro sketchbook and scanned.#353 / 12-Jun-18

Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom (2018)Directed by J A BayonaI watched "Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom" last night. I've not done a new sketch of it, rather, sharing a photo of the artwork I did with this movie featured. (Wore this shirt to the movie.) This movie is set a few years after the events of "Jurassic World". The park has closed but a new threat looms – an active volcano threatens to wipe out all life on Isla Nublar, and the question is whether to save these animals or not. Claire (Bryce Dallas Howard) and Owen (Chris Pratt) and a few other characters go to the island on a rescue effort but not all is as it seems – and the people who hired them may have ulterior motives. The volcano and rescue part that you see in the trailers is only about half of the movie's plot, which is a good thing. But unfortunately what followed was at times predictable and at times very comic book-ish / cartoonish. The leads did well and the movie is well made, it has nice cinematography and good visual effects, the dinosaur action is well handled. However overall I thought it was an interesting movie at best but not great. Michael Giacchino did the music but again that was very generic and not memorable in my opinion. The movie ends with a setup for another sequel. Let's see what that will be like.#vsco #google #pixel2xl #teampixel #madebygoogle @madebygoogle #jurassicworld #jurassicworldfallenkingdom #jurassicpark #dailymoviesketch

13 Reasons Why: Season 2 (2018)Developed by Brian YorkeyI recently finished watching Season 2 of "13 Reasons Why" on Netflix. The first season that aired last year got critical acclaim. It was an engaging and well acted high school drama, which looked into the circumstances that led to the suicide of Hannah Baker (Katherine Langford). Hannah left behind a set of audio tapes, each of which dealt with how one character influenced her decision to take her life.I liked the first season, and while some of the reasons presented didn't seem severe enough to me, for someone to commit suicide, taken purely as a form of entertainment / storytelling, I thought it was well done.In the second season, the framing device is this – Hannah's parents have filed a case against Liberty High, blaming the school's negligence as the cause of Hannah's death. Each episode shows the testimony of one of the characters in court. For those who liked the first season, I think this is worth watching. However, taken on its own merits, I don't think it's as good as the first Season. I have mixed feelings about Season 2. I thought the season didn't need 13 episodes, I felt it kind of dragged in the first half, and some of the characters and subplots (Clay's girlfriend Skye for example) were unnecessary, or went on for longer than they needed to (Justin's arc). However it did pick up as it went on. One thing that can't be faulted is the acting, once again, the young cast all give very good performances. This season at some points I think was a bit darker than the first. There is certainly more content in this season that is for mature audiences only.Overall I liked it and I think it's definitely worth watching.I drew Justin Prentice as Bryce Walker from the show. I thought he really played his character well, and brought the right mix of charm and creepiness to the role as the antagonist. The drawing was done with my 0.5mm 2B pencil and scanned. Swipe to see a version of the drawing with text.#352 / 7-Jun-18#dailymoviesketch #13reasonswhy #thirteenreasonswhy #brycewalker

Upgrade (2018)Directed by Leigh WhannellNo, I haven't seen this movie yet, unfortunately! I wish I was drawing this after having watched it, but it hasn't been released in India and I don't know if it will be. Probably have to wait for it to come to streaming somewhere.@kashyapchandra sent me the link to the trailer of this movie sometime back and it seems awesome. The storyline is this – an attack on Grey (Logan Marshall-Green) leaves him paralysed and his wife dead. However, he is implanted with an experimental chip called Stem, that functions as an enhanced brain. When Grey lets Stem take control of his body, he gets enhanced speed and strength (sort of like how Venom takes over Tom Hardy's body in that movie's trailer), and uses his abilities to track down his wife's killers. The movie seems like grand fun, and if the trailer is anything to go by, it has scenes of strong violence and bloodshed, good times. It's been getting good reviews too, mentioning that it's cleverly done. It's written and directed by "Saw" co-creator Leigh Whannell.I drew this shot from the trailer, where Grey / Stem jams a knife into an attacker's mouth, ripping it open (isn't this kind of what the "Saw" reverse beartrap would do?). The drawing was done with my 0.5mm 2B pencil and scanned.#351 / 5-Jun-18
