Terminator: Dark Fate (2019)Directed by Tim MillerThe first two Terminator movies – "The Terminator" (1984) and "Terminator 2: Judgment Day" (1991) are undeniable classics. There were three sequels that were not so well received (my opinion of those were that they were interesting but forgettable). "Dark Fate" is now an attempt to reboot the franchise with James Cameron returning to it. It is a direct T2 sequel, with "Deadpool"'s Tim Miller coming on board to direct. I watched it last week. The story is kind of a T2 retelling – you have an augmented soldier Grace (Mackenzie Davis) sent back in time to present day, to protect Dani (Natalia Reyes), with a new model Terminator, a REV-9 (Gabriel Luna) trying to kill her. Sarah Connor (Linda Hamilton) and the old model T-800 Terminator (Schwarzenegger) figure in the plot as well.So how does this film that's touted as the "best sequel since T2" fare? Unfortunately, in my opinion, it wasn't all that better than T3, Salvation and Genisys. It's certainly slick, with good production values and action scenes. The acting was also strong. But to me it wasn't memorable. I also wasn't convinced by the T-800's character arc, the villain at times felt too human, the future dystopia I felt was kind of ill defined. That's just me, your experience may vary, I still feel it's worth watching.Did anyone else notice that the version released in India had very less swearing? There seemed to be some words that were dubbed over. I don't think our guys did it, I think the filmmakers themselves made a more toned down version for release in some countries. This was annoying, resulting in an already tame barely R-rated movie coming to a U/A rating in India.I drew the REV-9 in it's skeleton form. The drawing was done with Bic ballpoint pen (and a bit of Gelly Roll) on A6 Brustro sketchbook and scanned.#DailyMovieSketch #terminator#terminatordarkfate#ballpointpen#497 / 9-Nov-19

Assault on Precinct 13 (1976)Directed by John CarpenterAfter watching "Kaithi" which had a story track with gangsters laying siege to a police station, I wanted to watch this movie. I had seen it several years ago but didn't really remember it, so I watched it today (there's a HD upload on YouTube). The setup for the film is interesting — the bulk of the film is set in a police station due to be closed down, with only a skeleton crew available. A bus carrying three criminals has to stop at the station. When a gang called "Street Thunder" 'marks' the station and moves in for the kill, it's up to the few people inside to make a stand. It's an entertaining action thriller, running just at a little over 90 minutes. Carpenter was homaging the Western and the zombie movie, and for his second big screen outing it's a very well made movie. It was made on a budget of just $150,000 but it looks bigger than that.I love the music score for the movie and today discovered a disco version of the theme on YouTube as well, which I've been listening to on repeat! The movie has one of the few instances in film depicting a little girl getting shot — which is what I drew. [Drawing of @karthi_offl from @dir_lokeshkanagaraj's #Kaithi]Kaithi a.k.a. Kaidhi (2019)Directed by Lokesh KanagarajI had seen Lokesh Kanagaraj's earlier "Maanagaram" on Amazon Prime a couple of years back, it was really good, well directed with a terrific screenplay. So, I was interested in watching this, his second movie. I watched the Telugu dubbed version on Thursday night. The movie opens with a drug bust, with cops seizing almost a ton of cocaine and stashing it away in a secret location. The gangsters are now after the lives of some key officers and manage to poison the entire unit. Cop Vijay (Narain) takes the help of the titular prisoner Dilli (Karthi) to drive a lorry to take the officers to safety. There are moles in either camp, so Dilli has to deal with roadblocks every now and then, and meanwhile the gangsters are also laying siege to a police station, trying to break out one of their own. This was a fantastic thriller. I absolutely loved it. The screenplay and direction are stellar again, keeping you on edge throughout. There are always at least two suspenseful situations unfolding throughout the length of the movie. It's tightly edited and wastes no time, even the opening credits unfold during a tense scene. The performances are great (especially Karthi's nuanced acting effortlessly switching between silent intensity and emotional beats). One novelty here is that the entire film is set at night (in "Maanagaram", one of the stylistic choices they made was not to reveal the character names of the protagonists to the audience at all). There are some mass action scenes that I felt were a bit at odds with the gritty realism of the rest of the movie but that's again a choice so can't be faulted. The hordes of faceless thugs give off a zombie horror / John Carpenter-esque / Precinct 13 vibe. The badass music score and cinematography complement the film very well. Overall, a must watch! I drew Karthi as Dilli from the movie. [#DailyMovieSketch × #Inktober #Inktober2019] @inktoberDeath Note (2006-07)Directed by Tetsurō ArakiFor the Inktober prompt word "ripe", I thought of the Shinigami (God of Death) Ryuk from the "Death Note" anime, and how he likes apples from our realm, since the ones in the Shinigami realm are lifeless / dry. So I drew him.The drawing was done with @staedtlermars ballpoint pens on A6 Brustro sketchbook and scanned. "Death Note" is one of the best anime series made, it's so engaging and cinematic. I love the battle of wits between the characters Light and L. So for now, this does it for the Inktober sketches this year. I have done 17 drawings (better than previous two years where I did between 10-15 sketches only). (I'm not including the one minute drawing of Rick, the brush pen Samurai Cop 2 and the Cat Meme I drew on @karthikabhiram.) I'll try to do one more, to bring it up to an even 18.#ballpointpen #inksketch #penandink #inktoberindia #handdrawn#deathnote #ryuk #lightyagami #494 / 31-Oct-19

[#DailyMovieSketch × #Inktober #Inktober2019] @inktoberFight Club (1999)Directed by David FincherFor the Inktober prompt word "injured", I thought of drawing something from "Fight Club". I'd done a sketch on "Pulp Fiction", one of my all time favourite movies, so thought of working in this one as well as it's another favourite.I drew Edward Norton as the Narrator. This is from the very end of the movie where he gets injured (I won't say how, to avoid spoilers), bringing his character arc to a conclusion. And he says, "You met me at a very strange time in my life." Rounding off @inktober #inktober2019 #inktober with these two drawings — Edward Norton from the end of "Fight Club" ("You met me at a very strange time in my life") for the prompt word 'injured' and Ryuk from "Death Note" for the prompt word 'ripe'. I did 17 sketches this time (more than the last couple of years which were between 10-15), all with these @staedtlermars colour ballpoint pens. I'll see if I can do one more tonight to make it an even 18 if possible! I posted these two on my @karthikabhiram account, thought I'll put them up here too. #google #pixel2xl #teampixel #karthikabhiram #fightclub #deathnote #dailymoviesketch #ballpointpen

[#DailyMovieSketch × #Inktober #Inktober2019] @inktoberA Clockwork Orange (1971)Directed by Stanley KubrickFor the Inktober prompt word "wild" (older one that I've not drawn), I thought of Stanley Kubrick's "A Clockwork Orange" adapted from the book by Anthony Burgess. I'd actually heard someone refer to this movie sometime ago, and I had not seen it in many many years so I rewatched it last month. I'd actually started this sketch then itself but didn't complete it. I thought this could be related to the "wild" prompt word and so completed the drawing today and am posting it.The movie stars Malcolm McDowell as Alex, a young man in a futuristic dystopian society. Alex and his gang engage in violence and rape, and when he is imprisoned, he chooses to undergo a procedure that would rid him of his violent tendencies (hence the "wild"). The movie was rated X at the time of release. As with Kubrick's other movies, one can appreciate the movie itself and the craft behind it. I drew Alex from the scene in which he undergoes the Ludovico procedure. The drawing was done with @staedtlermars ballpoint pens on A6 Brustro sketchbook and scanned.#ballpointpen #inksketch #penandink #inktoberindia #handdrawn#aclockworkorange #stanleykubrick#ludovico#492 / 29-Oct-19

[#DailyMovieSketch × #Inktober #Inktober2019] @inktoberPulp Fiction (1994)Directed by Quentin TarantinoFor the Inktober prompt word "tasty", I thought of this scene from one of my all time favourite movies, "Pulp Fiction". Hitmen Vincent (John Travolta) and Jules (Samuel L Jackson) pay a visit to a group of people who've double crossed their boss. One of them is having breakfast – a Big Kahuna burger. Jules takes a bite out of it and says, "Mmm-hmm. This IS a tasty burger!" The drawing was done with @staedtlermars ballpoint pens on A6 Brustro sketchbook. [#DailyMovieSketch × #Inktober #Inktober2019] @inktoberBig Trouble in Little China (1986)Directed by John CarpenterFor the Inktober prompt word "ancient", I thought of this fun movie from 1986, John Carpenter's fantasy-adventure-comedy "Big Trouble in Little China" about a trucker Jack Burton (Kurt Russell) who gets mixed up in Ancient Chinese Mysticism. The movie was ahead of its time and it got recognition as a cult classic only years after its release. I've always loved the movie from the time I saw it (years ago, on TV), and it holds up well even on rewatching.I drew the ancient sorcerer David Lo Pan (played delightfully by James Hong), in his old man form.
