Deadpool 2 a.k.a. Untitled Deadpool Sequel (2018)Directed by David LeitchYesterday a new trailer for "Deadpool 2" was released (called "Deadpool, Meet Cable"), and it gives us our first look at Josh Brolin's character Cable. This movie continues the creative marketing of its predecessor, none of the teasers released have been traditional ones – it's as if they are all aware that they are trailers, and feature footage specifically shot for the promo, and then some actual footage from the movie. Here, they even poked fun at "Justice League"'s reshoots with CGI removal of Henry Cavill's mustache. We see a shot of Cable with a green coloured hand, and Deadpool calls this out and asks why the visual effects aren't completed for this shot, and says, "It's a metal arm! It's not like we're trying to remove a mustache! Aw, fuck it, I'll do it myself". What follows is a clip of him playing with toys telling us about Deadpool and Cable, before showing us actual footage from the movie.There is an International Trailer which has a couple of altered shots and dialogue changed to tone down the swearing.Between the previous teaser and this, the movie has an earlier release date of May 18. They still haven't revealed the actual title of the movie though.I drew "Sheriff Deadpool" from the trailer. The toy looks like it has been adapted from @robliefeld's artwork. This was drawn with a @sakuraofamerica Pigma Micron 0.005 pen on Brustro sketchbook. I was nominated by @yvonnecheeart for #thepennychallenge, so I drew this one in real small size. Blade II (2002)Directed by Guillermo del ToroA couple of weekends back, I watched both "Blade: Trinity" and "Blade II" on Amazon Prime. It was an interesting experience to watch a pre-Marvel Cinematic Universe-Marvel movie now! The second entry in the "Blade" series has Wesley Snipes as the titular vampire hunter, being contacted by a group of vampires who want him to work with them, to eradicate a new kind of vampire – the Reaper, who is equally as dangerous to vampires as to humans. This movie has Guillermo del Toro's stamp all over it, with an energy, a fast pace, good action scenes and great creature effects, and is probably the best of the "Blade" movies. The cast includes Donnie Yen and Ron Perlman, and you can't really go wrong with that.I drew Luke Goss as Nomak, the leader of the Reapers. Ant-Man and The Wasp (2018)Directed by Peyton ReedA few days back the trailer for "Ant-Man and The Wasp" was released. This will be the 20th entry in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, being released in July, after Marvel's big event film "Avengers: Infinity War". As a follow-up to the very entertaining 2015 "Ant-Man", this looks like it will be just as fun, with interesting ideas of objects shrinking and becoming giant-size. It'll be interesting to see though, how an MCU movie set before, but released after "Infinity War" will be like (what would they set up in the post credits scene?). The Lego Batman Movie (2017)Directed by Chris McKayLego Batman was one of the most popular characters in 2014's "The Lego Movie", so he got his own spinoff in the form of this 2017 movie. I'd already posted a review and sketch of this movie last year (I loved it, and enjoyed it more than "The Lego Movie"). This one is out now on Amazon Prime Video, and when I was told about it a few days ago, I watched the movie again.Like the first time I saw it, I enjoyed it very much. It has very detailed and epic animation, and looks very colourful. The jokes keep coming at a swift pace, and I loved the movie's handling of the Batman character and his relationship with the Joker. I said this in my earlier review – this is a clever and inventive light hearted take on what Alan Moore's "The Killing Joke" explored in a very serious way. There are so many jokes and references that it would take more than one viewing to spot them all. The voice work is also great. Devilman Crybaby (2018)Directed by Masaaki Yuasa "Devilman Crybaby" is a Netflix Original anime series comprising 10 half-hour episodes, and I had been reading good things about it, so decided to watch it. I finished the show today and thought it was very good. The show is adapted from a manga called "Devilman". The storyline concerns a high school student Akira whose friend Ryo tells him about the existence of demons, and makes him fuse with the demon Amon. However, since Akira is pure hearted, he gains the ability to transform his body while still retaining his humanity (into what is called a "devilman"). Ryo's actions set off conflict between humans and demons.The show has some pretty explicit content in the form of gory violence, nudity and sex (there is anime that is far more explicit though, for example, "Urotsukidoji" which I watched a few months ago in its uncut form, on YouTube of all places). The animation style is quite slick and well done, and I absolutely loved the electronic soundtrack by Agraph (Kensuke Ushio). For me, it kicked into high gear from Episode 7 and the last few episodes were pretty epic and a great end to the story. Bright (2017)Directed by David AyerOne of the last movies I watched in 2017 was "Bright", which for the way it was distributed, is a pretty interesting film. It's fashioned as a blend of the gritty cop action film with fantasy, budgeted at 90 million US dollars, starring Will Smith and Joel Edgerton, from the director of "Suicide Squad", and the writer of "Chronicle", released to Netflix.The movie is set in an alternate modern day LA, where fantasy creatures like orcs and elves exist alongside humans. Will Smith is Ward, a cop who has an orc partner Jakoby (Edgerton), and tensions run high because orcs are considered a lesser race. The plot has them rescuing a runaway elf in possession of a magic wand, and being pursued by various groups of humans, elves and orcs. I thought the movie was very uneven. There were things to like about it, like the concept, the leads' acting and the soundtrack. But the tone wasn't consistent, the sort of lighter comedic banter didn't sit well with the grittier feel. It also felt like the characters were just moving from place to place, with motivations and plot not always being developed properly. Noomi Rapace plays the villain Leila, and she is very underused in the movie. Overall I felt it was an OK movie but wished it would have been executed better. Netflix has ordered a sequel, hope that would flow better and explain more of the backstory.With this, Netflix has a "Dark" and "Bright" released within a few months of each other! Boyka: Undisputed (2017)Directed by Todor ChapkanovThe third film in the "Undisputed" series, "Undisputed III: Redemption" became somewhat of a cult hit, because of the well-choreographed Mixed Martial Arts fight scenes in it. Scott Adkins made an impression as the lead character Yuri Boyka in it. So, fans were waiting for quite some time for a fourth film to be made. Part 3's director, Isaac Florentine (known for quality direct-to-video action movies) didn't return for the fourth installment, though he is on board as producer (I read that he couldn't direct this one because of a death in his family). "Boyka" was released in 2017 to video, and both it and Part III are on Netflix, where I watched it.The story begins with Yuri Boyka in Kiev, after escaping from the police in the previous movie. He has found religion – so he donates all his earnings from fighting underground matches to the church. He has a shot at going professional at a tournament in Budapest, so the organizers are invited to watch one of Boyka's fights. Unfortunately, Boyka's opponent Viktor dies after the fight, and Boyka regrets this so much that he travels to Drovny, Russia to make peace with Viktor's family. In Russia, he finds Viktor's wife Alma reluctantly working for gangster Zourab (Alon Aboutboul), to pay off her debt. Boyka agrees to fight for Zourab in exchange for Alma's freedom.The story is simple, and the execution is a mixed bag. The fight sequences are well done and the acting is pretty good. Scott Adkins in particular made the role of Boyka his own. However, I disagreed with some of the stylistic choices the director made – using zooms for example – which I felt made it look less cinematic and let on its DTV origins. Even the titles (though one may not consider that as important), felt a bit cheap, had they used a different font and size, it would have looked better.Overall though, I enjoyed the movie and would rate it a 7/10. From what I remember of Part III (should watch it again), that was a better film than this.I drew Boyka from the end of the movie where he tells Zourab "Bring me your fucking champion". Big Trouble in Little China (1986)Directed by John CarpenterHappy Birthday John Carpenter (16-Jan)! I've always respected John Carpenter as a filmmaker, some of his horror / science fiction movies are regarded as true classics, and every film of his has some interesting ideas behind it. He has done the music score for the majority of his movies, and they are all memorable soundtracks.I have done quite a few Carpenter-inspired sketches here. Today, I did a sketch based on this movie, which perhaps is not one of his best movies, but one of my favourites, and probably one of the most entertaining. It's the action / comedy / fantasy "Big Trouble in Little China", which had its hero Jack Burton (Kurt Russell) finding himself way out of his element, when he gets mixed up in the spiritual plans of David Lo Pan (James Hong). The movie flopped badly on release but has since become a cult classic, and for good reason – it's a whole lot of fun and has a kickass soundtrack.Here I drew a sketch of Thunder (played by Carter Wong), who gets inflated towards the end of the movie (yes, it sounds absurd but it all fits well into the overall world of the film). Kaalakaandi (2017)Directed by Akshat VermaOne of my favourite movies of 2011 was "Delhi Belly" – I loved the absurd comedy and the fast paced storyline. That's the reason I was excited to see this movie, "Kaalakaandi" (the name is apparently Marathi slang for when things go completely wrong), since "Delhi Belly" writer Akshat Verma wrote and directed this.This dark comedy is about six main characters – Saif Ali Khan's character and his brother, who is getting married, Sobhita Dhulipala's character and her boyfriend, who attend a party, and two lowlife thugs, played by Vijay Raaz and Deepak Dobriyal. By the end the storylines are resolved and they do connect up, but I felt it didn't have the impact as expected. The movie was quite entertaining and funny, and the actors all do a great job, so it's engaging to see nevertheless. Overall I'd rate it a 7/10, definitely worth watching. Maybe just don't go in expecting another "Delhi Belly", though, in many ways, this has a very similar style.This is a drawing of Saif Ali Khan's character from the movie, during his LSD fuelled trip.
