The Avengers (2012)Directed by Joss WhedonI booked my tickets for "Avengers: Endgame" yesterday! I'm seeing it first time on Friday 26th night, 10:40 PM show in 2D. Then second time on Saturday night, in 3D, with my parents. You can check the Stories I posted on @karthikabhiram (which I've reposted here also), with more information about the presentation of the movie (IMAX, non IMAX, and the fact that we don't have an IMAX theatre in Hyderabad), and I've also shared a couple of MCU Recap videos and suggestions on which of the 21 previous Marvel Cinematic Universe movies you could watch, as a refresher before Endgame.I watched those recap videos and have read the plot summaries of all 21 MCU films. I watched "The Avengers" yesterday, I don't think I will be able to watch "Age of Ultron" since I will have work travel tomorrow and the day after. So, watching "Avengers: Infinity War" and that will be it. But since that movie did a great job of bringing everyone up to speed, and since I've followed the MCU storyline since the beginning, this recap should be enough and I'm all set for "Endgame". It has been years since I saw the original "The Avengers", the end of MCU Phase 1, which brought together the heroes established in the previous films against the invading Chitauri, and introduced Thanos (then unnamed, in the mid credits scene) and the Infinity Stones (here, the Tesseract). It's such a well made and entertaining movie. Despite it's close to 150 min runtime it moved so fast, the characters were all well written and performed, and there were so many crowd pleasing moments (I remember the audience hooting in the theatre several times when I watched it). I drew Cobie Smulders as S.H.I.E.L.D. Agent Maria Hill from the movie. The drawing was done with @ns1pen and Bic multi colour ballpoint pen and Gelly Roll pen on A6 @Brustro sketchbook and scanned.#DailyMovieSketch #AvengersEndgame#Avengers #Endgame #marvel#josswhedon #cobiesmulders #mariahill#shield #mcu #marvelcinematicuniverse@marvelstudios @marvel_india#439 / 22-Apr-19

Behind the scenes! You'd have seen the latest artwork on @dailymoviesketch, one of Rhona Mitra from the 2008 Neil Marshall movie "Doomsday". I drew a sketch on his "Hellboy" adaptation a few days ago, so thought I'd revisit this older movie. The drawing was done with the @ns1pen. There's a Q&A that I'm doing on Stories on my @karthikabhiram account, and @hue.saturation asked a question on proportions. I have what I call a "mirror test", which is basically holding the drawing against a mirror or the reverse side of the page against the light. This enhances the flaws and allows you to correct them while drawing. The second picture shows that. And, my posts on @dailymoviesketch are scans, here is a behind the scenes look. I scan the artwork at 1200 DPI. I erase the paper texture around the drawing so that the background is totally white. I then adjust the Levels in Photoshop to get the contrast the way I like it. Next is cropping to ensure that the art is centred, and then adjusting the Canvas Size to make it a square image of around 4500 × 4500 pixels. This goes to Dropbox and then I open it on phone and post it. I apply a Fade of 10 while posting on IG. #google #pixel2xl #teampixel #karthikabhiram #DailyMovieSketch #handsinframe #flatlay

Doomsday (2008)Directed by Neil MarshallSince the last sketch I did here was one from "Hellboy", I thought I'd revisit director Neil Marshall's earlier work, the 2008 post apocalyptic action movie "Doomsday". Taking inspiration from "Escape From New York" (there's a character named Carpenter in the movie!) and "Mad Max" (yes, there's also a character named Miller — after the directors if both those movies), this movie is about a squad of soldiers led by Eden Sinclair, who have to enter a walled-off Scotland, in hope of finding a cure to the Reaper virus, which threatens to decimate London. The movie has some good action scenes and has a good amount of blood and violence. It however was not successful when it was released. But it's well made.I drew Rhona Mitra as Eden Sinclair from the movie, the drawing was done with NS1 pen and Bic red ballpoint pen on A6 @Brustro sketchbook and scanned.#DailyMovieSketch #doomsday #rhonamitra #ballpointpen@ns1pen #ns1pen#inksketch#438 / 19-Apr-19

[#DrawWithMango × #DailyMovieSketch]Hellboy (2004) Directed by Guillermo del ToroHellboy (2019) Directed by Neil MarshallThis time, the theme for @mangopenciler's Art Challenge is #ThenAndNow. I watched "Hellboy" on Thursday, and thought, I'd do a sketch featuring both the film versions of the character.I have liked the Hellboy character since the early 2000s. When the first adaptation came out I read some of the books, and became a fan of Mike Mignola's artwork, especially his use of chiaroscuro and deep blacks. Del Toro's movies always are personal, and I enjoyed his adaptation, with Ron Perlman owning the role. The movie even had a fantastic poster by Drew Struzan.Fast forward 15 years, and we have what was supposed to be the second sequel but instead became an R rated reboot. "Stranger Things"'s David Harbour plays the role here, the world's best paranormal investigator, who is up against Milla Jovovich's villain, the Blood Queen who if she comes back to power, will unleash a new plague upon humanity. The movie is entertaining and took advantage of the R rating, providing quite a bit of blood and violence and also swearing in the dialogue. This made it a very different take from del Toro's. The movie has been getting bad reviews, I think it definitely doesn't deserve those and it's better than they indicate. I can understand the criticism though, as the movie felt very rushed, with a lot that is crammed into the runtime, with undeveloped characters. I enjoyed it though but found that it's one of those movies you won't remember much of, once you leave the theatre. I liked all the R rated stuff but got annoyed at our censors for making cuts despite giving the movie an Adult rating. Hope I'll get to see the uncut version soon. The acting was good, Harbour and Jovovich give it their all, and the action scenes were well done. So, I would recommend watching the movie.I drew both the versions of Hellboy, this was done with Bic multi colour ballpoint pens and Gelly Roll pen on A6 @Brustro sketchbook and scanned.#hellboy #guillermodeltoro #neilmarshall#ronperlman #davidharbour #strangerthings#ballpointpen #inksketch#437 / 13-Apr-19

Watched #Hellboy yesterday and it was a pretty entertaining film. Certainly not the bad movie that its low Rotten Tomatoes rating (13%?) indicates. It was proudly R-rated, which means there was a good amount of swearing and quite a bit of bloodshed and gore (people getting limbs ripped off etc). This was very much appreciated, but unfortunately our censors made cuts despite it being given an A rating. This is not new, I've always thought it's a stupid thing though, cutting a movie that's already rated A. Oh well, hope I get to see an uncut version soon. The movie did feel very rushed and I got the feeling that they crammed in a lot in its two hour runtime. It had its flaws but I enjoyed it. I'll do a sketch for it. In the mean time, here is the Movies of 2019 artwork with the movie titles mentioned — I made this for a print. #karthikabhiram #dailymoviesketch

Super Deluxe (2019)Directed by Thiagarajan KumararajaLast Thursday I watched Thiagarajan Kumararaja's second film @superdeluxethemovie at PVR Cinemas at Forum Mall. It was shown with English subtitles, so I was able to appreciate it better. It's certainly an experience watching the movie, which is a dark comedy / crime / drama, with four stories told in parallel — that of a group of youngsters watching a porn film and a gangster; an unfaithful wife, her husband and a dead body; a transgender woman and a kid; and that of a man who has found his own religion and whose faith is tested. This is just scratching the surface though, there's much more to it that can't be discussed without spoilers. The movie is definitely not for everyone. I liked it though, and the cinematic craft behind it (cinematography, music, acting, direction) is extraordinary. There is no single protagonist in the movie, the stories are all involving, it would suddenly surprise you by throwing WTF moments at you once in a while. The film comes from the director's production company "Tyler Durden and Kino Fist", there is a sudden bit of the Star Wars theme played on traditional Carnatic instruments, there are movie posters for "Aliens" and "Bulletproof Monk" on walls, and it seems that the entire film is taking place in some surreal alternate reality.Think "Pulp Fiction" crossed with "Repo Man", with the unique influences of the writers, all of whom are directors themselves. Kumararaja apparently gave outlines to them and then asked them to write different parts of the movie, and he combined it all together. It's a three hour long film and it was 3 AM when I reached home, but I still watched a fascinating 45 minute interview by @baradwajrangan with the writers. Highly recommended movie to watch — like it or not, you will come away with respect for the filmmakers for executing this vision. If you watch the above interview and rewatch the trailer after the movie, you'll have a better appreciation of it.I drew Ashwanth Ashokkumar as Raasukutty from the movie. The drawing was done with Bic ballpoint pens on A6 sketchbook and scanned. (More observations in first comment!) #436 / 9-Apr-19

[THREE YEARS OF @DAILYMOVIESKETCH!] Inglourious Basterds (2009)Directed by Quentin TarantinoI am one of those old-timer Instagrammers from Hyderabad and India, since I've been active on @instagram from November 2012, on my account @karthikabhiram. On 4-Apr-16 though, inspired by Art Challenges like @inktober, I started a second art account, @dailymoviesketch, for me to post my movie related drawings. I remember thinking at the time, "let's see how long I can keep this up". I did daily sketches for 4 months, which later on (and even currently) changed to one new sketch every 2-3 days. The earlier drawings were rough and quickly done (15-30 min), nowadays I spend a lot more time on them (45-120 min). With my busy work schedule, it's very difficult to draw daily. However, drawing REGULARLY, even if it's in a 2-3 day frequency, has really helped me improve a great deal. There were a lot of bad drawings earlier, that has come down now, I'm more or less happy with most of the work I'm posting. Still a long way to improve though. But, mistakes and all, I'm happy about all the drawings as they've all helped towards practice (350+ hours!). Sincere thanks to everyone who follows this account, for your support! Some of you have been there since the early days (you know who you are), thank you for sticking around for so long! To everyone, old followers and those who discovered this account more recently, I convey my gratitude, and I hope you find my work interesting. This is a drawing of Michael Fassbender as Archie Hickox from the fantastic "Inglourious Basterds". Among the many superbly crafted scenes where Tarantino builds suspense with dialogue, this is the tavern scene later in the movie, where Archie orders 'three glasses' by holding up his fingers like this, whereas the supposed German way of showing three is to show the thumb and first two fingers outstretched. I thought it was clever to reference this for my three year completion! This drawing was done with 0.5mm 2B pencil on A5 @cansonpaper and scanned.I'll be doing a recap on Stories here, of notable posts from this account. Stay tuned for that.#DailyMovieSketch#435 / 4-Apr-19

[#DrawWithMango × #DailyMovieSketch]During the major part of March, @mangopenciler had run an Art Challenge on #90sNostalgia, where the idea was to make art that reminded one of the 1990s. I loved the idea and decided to make sketches based on 1990s movies. The initial thought was to do one sketch of a movie from each year in the decade, however, it ended up slightly differently. I did 9 sketches overall, which you can see in this grid. The movies here are — • 1990 — Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles• 1991 — Terminator 2: Judgment Day• 1992 — Police Story 3: Super Cop• 1993 — Cliffhanger• 1994 — Léon a.k.a. The Professional• 1994 — The Mask• 1996 — From Dusk Till Dawn• 1997 — Face/Off• 1999 — Fight ClubI think I covered the major franchises, movie stars and popular movies of the time period. There are more movies that I could have done sketches of, of course. The 90s was a very nostalgic time period, a lot of movies are very close to me. So, now and then I'd rewatch an old favourite and do a sketch. Thanks to this theme, I got to rewatch some of these movies too, which was nice. The drawings were all done with ballpoint pen (the @ns1pen and Bic multi colour), a bit of Gelly Roll on A6 @brustro sketchbook by @creativehandsartmaterials and scanned.I'm posting on both my accounts — @dailymoviesketch gets the collage of the posts, whereas @karthikabhiram gets a photo of my phone with this collage.Waiting for the next theme!#karthikabhiram #ballpointpen #inksketch

[#DrawWithMango × #DailyMovieSketch]Fight Club (1999)Directed by David FincherThe last drawing for @mangopenciler's #90snostalgia Art Challenge is based on one of my all time favourite movies.David Fincher's film based on Chuck Palahniuk's book about disillusioned men rebelling against the system by starting "Fight Clubs" was amazing, superbly made, brilliantly acted, and darkly funny.I actually watched this in the early 2000s, and that was the time I was completing my Engineering, then did my MBA and then started working. The "Fuck the System" attitude of the movie certainly was relatable at the time!It is one of my favourite movies and I have huge respect for David Fincher as a filmmaker. I drew Brad Pitt as Tyler Durden from the movie. The drawing was done with Bic multi colour ballpoint pen and Gelly Roll pen on A6 @Brustro sketchbook and scanned.#fightclub #bradpitt #jimuhls #chuckpalahniuk#ballpointpen #inksketch #434 / 31-Mar-19
