Watchmen (2019)Created by Damon Lindelof𝘼 𝙂𝙊𝘿 𝙒𝘼𝙇𝙆𝙎 𝙄𝙉𝙏𝙊 𝘼𝘽𝘼𝙍So the last time I did a sketch based on “Watchmen” was a couple of weeks ago, and I’d just finished watching Episode 6, which was a high point in an already very well made show. But the episodes that came after that had some reveals that truly elevated the show even further. I would recommend reading the book even more now to appreciate the show — seeing as how a lot of things are directly referenced from the graphic novel. Episode 8 was particularly amazing, a feat of storytelling, writing and directing!I can’t wait for the finale (Episode 9) — which will be released at 8:30 AM tomorrow morning India Time, on @hotstarpremium. I agree with what an article on @verge said — even if the show messes up the finale (which I don’t think it will, given the quality of the show so far), it still is an outstanding work. Definitely there in my Best Movies and TV shows of 2019 list!Not to give any spoilers but I drew a Dr Manhattan mask from the episode. Wonder Woman 1984 (2020)Directed by Patty JenkinsA couple of days ago, the first teaser for this movie was released, it was just around 30 seconds long and promised a full trailer the next day. Early yesterday morning, the full trailer was released and it was really good! The teaser ended with a bit of the song "Blue Monday" by New Order, which I really like (after hearing it on the "Atomic Blonde" soundtrack). I was pleasantly surprised that the entire trailer is set to an arrangement of this song, there are bits of the trailer edited to sync up with the song as well. The movie looks entertaining and I'm looking forward to watching it next Summer.Chris Pine is back as Steve Trevor (how, I don't know), and here the roles seem to be reversed — with him being the 'fish out of water' character as opposed to Diana in the first film.I drew Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman wearing her new armour. Watchmen (2019)Created by Damon LindelofThe graphic novel "Watchmen" is close to my heart – it's one of the first graphic novels I read in the early 2000s when I was getting into these things, and in 2005, a copy of the book was the first thing I bought with my very first salary after I started working. I enjoyed Zack Snyder's 2009 movie adaptation (there were some inconsistencies though, and I would have loved for them to have stuck to the original ending) as well. So, I was thinking, what was the point of adapting it again to a TV series?Later I realised that this show is not an adaptation of the book, but a story set 34 years after the events of the original. The story follows Detective Angela Abar a.k.a. Sister Night (Regina King) uncovering a conspiracy in 2019 Tulsa, Oklahoma, involving the Seventh Kavalry (a radical cult following a twisted Rorschach ideology). So far there are six episodes that have been released (I actually signed up for Hotstar just for this show), and they've all been very good. The show is actually pushing it better with each episode, the characters, the ideas are all very well done. And I'm really glad they're taking off from the book (I was overjoyed when I saw squid references in the first episode). The atmosphere and worldbuilding is awesome. This 2019 feels like our world, but at the same time you know there's something off – for instance, none of the characters use mobile phones like we do, no cameras, no internet and computers like we have. [500TH DRAWING ON @DAILYMOVIESKETCH]Avengers: Endgame (2019)Directed by Joe and Anthony RussoFor the 500th drawing on this page I thought I would do something special. Initially I had the idea to draw Tony Stark’s Snap from “Endgame”, but then once this scene was released I thought I'd draw this instead.On the recently launched Disney+ network, a set of deleted scenes from “Avengers: Endgame” was released. This one is set in the soul world (the same one where we saw Thanos and child Gamora at the end of “Avengers: Infinity War”), where Morgan Stark (“13 Reasons Why”’s Katherine Langford) meets her father Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr). Tony questions whether the decision he made at the end of “Endgame” was right. She assures him that it was the right one, and says that she loves him, to which he replies, “I love you 3000” echoing what she said to him as a kid many years ago. I thought it was a really nice and touching moment and so I picked this to draw.I can understand why the scene was cut from the movie, maybe, in an already busy 3 hour film, they couldn't fit it in seamlessly. John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum (2019)Directed by Chad StahelskiIf you have been following my posts for some time, you may know that I don't like censorship of movies. I especially get annoyed when our overly sensitive Indian Censor Board makes cuts to movies when they are already rated "A". Why does a movie already certified to be for Adults only need to be cut? Also, I don't like the idea of people getting overly sensitive about the content in certain movies. Thankfully, we get uncensored content on Netflix and other streaming services, but there are groups of people looking to censor that too.With this thought and in conversation with a couple of friends, I had this idea to do a series of sketches showing or rather celebrating films with adult content, especially things that would get censored.This is one of them, showing a scene that was cut in the version that we saw in India – where John Wick stabs a guy in the eye. I'll do more of these, and will tag them as #uncensored. You can see this uncut scene on YouTube too.Without a doubt, "John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum" is one of the best films of 2019. The movie has got standout action scenes that are brilliantly done and very artistic, so, just dismissing them as adult content and cutting them, I feel is a big disservice to the movie. People get shot, stabbed and otherwise killed off in very creative ways, that will leave you with a huge grin on your face. I'm actually glad that most of the violence survived uncut (censorship in other countries could be probably worse), but I'm still annoyed that they cut it after rating it "A". To be clear, violence in real life isn't good. But in movies, I say, bring it on, the stronger the better! Filmmakers should have the right to show whatever they want, and it should be up to the audience to decide whether they like it or not.The drawing was done with 0.5mm 2B pencil in a one inch square size on a sketchbook gifted by @dear.artsie and scanned.This is drawing number 499 on this page. [Drawing of @rebeccaferguson__ from @flanaganfilm's @doctorsleepmovie]Doctor Sleep (2019)Directed by Mike FlanaganIn the past few years, a standout work of Mike Flanagan's has been "The Haunting of Hill House", which I really loved, so I was excited that he was bringing the sequel to "The Shining" to the big screen. "The Shining" is a classic horror film, and a classic Stanley Kubrick film (probably more associated with Kubrick than Stephen King, who apparently initially didn't like the adaptation of his work). Flanagan's task was to make a sequel to the Kubrick movie and also an adaptation of Stephen King's sequel novel, "Doctor Sleep", in a way that would appeal to all parties. I think he succeeded here! I watched the movie last Friday and enjoyed it.The story follows Danny Torrance (Ewan McGregor) years after the events of the first film. He is living a life in the small town of Frazier, New Hampshire. There is a cult called The True Knot, led by Rose The Hat (Rebecca Ferguson) who feast on those with Shining powers, and they are drawn to a teenager Abra (Kayleigh Curran). She reaches out to Danny for help and they have to stop The True Knot.I really liked the movie. I appreciated that they carried forward the story, but did their own thing in not trying to cheaply ape the original (though one would find lots of references). While I didn't find this movie scary, it rather maintained a creepy atmosphere throughout. I thought Flanagan's voice, similar to some of the dramatic tones of Hill House came through here, it's a more character driven piece.The two ladies' performances – Rebecca Ferguson and Kayleigh Curran – I thought were outstanding. The music set the tone too and I liked the cinematography and visuals. They went to painstaking lengths to recreate the original film's sets, and that care shows.
