[#AnInchAugust × #DailyMovieSketch — Drawing of @radhikaofficial from @netflix_in’s “Ghoul”] Ghoul (2018)Directed by Patrick GrahamThere haven’t been new drawings here for a while now because I have been really busy with work. I will continue to be busy with running recruitment drives through the month of September, so updates here will be sporadic. Anyway, I got some time now to draw and post this.Over the last weekend I watched this three episode miniseries called “Ghoul” on Netflix. From British filmmaker Patrick Graham, this is a Phantom / Blumhouse production. India has become a police state in the near future. Meghdoot 31 is a terrorist holding / interrogation facility, with holding cells underground and the entire base cut off from the outside world (to the extent of the windows being blacked out so that no one knows the passage of time inside). It is here that a dangerous terrorist is transferred — and there seems to be something supernatural about him. Radhika Apte plays Nida Rahim, an interrogator who has been assigned to that base.I liked the atmosphere that they created, the isolated setting (sort of like a John Carpenter “The Thing” vibe) is quite nice and lends itself well to supernatural horror. Had they trimmed a bit of the backstory this could have easily been a two hour feature film rather than three 50 minute episodes. I liked it overall but there was a definite feeling of familiarity and it was all rather predictable. Worth watching though. There are quite a few memes that have come up recently commenting on how Radhika Apte is in everything that Netflix India has released. Both her and Netflix are also in on the joke. I drew her as Nida, the drawing was done with 0.5mm 2B mechanical pencil on paper and scanned. White highlights were added with a white gel pen. Drawing is one square inch in size (this may be the last one I'm doing for the #AnInchAugust challenge). Like my drawing of @mipalkarofficial I'll post a photo of this on my @karthikabhiram account too. #ghoul #radhikaapte#373 / 30-Aug-18

Ant-Man and The Wasp (2018)Directed by Peyton ReedThe last set of drawings were all small ones, for the #AnInchAugust Challenge. This one though is a regular sized drawing — I actually started this before the one inch drawings but I completed it only now.I watched "Ant-Man and The Wasp" a few weeks ago and I enjoyed the movie. The story picks up after the events of "Captain America: Civil War" where Scott Lang (Paul Rudd) is under house arrest, and is approached by the Pyms to help them construct a machine that can take them to the Quantum Realm to retrieve the original Wasp, who has been lost there for 30 years. However, a character called the Ghost appears to also be after the same technology, and she is stuck in a constantly phasing state. The movie is very entertaining and a lot of fun, and has a lot of very creative action scenes and use of shrinking to ant-size and growing to giant size. I liked the acting and also the music. Just when you think this seems like more a standalone movie, they do tell you when this is taking place related to the events of "Avengers: Infinity War". Do watch for the mid credits scene. Very good movie overall, recommended!I drew Hannah John Kamen as Ghost from the movie. The drawing was done with my 0.5 mm 2B mechanical pencil on A5 Brustro sketchbook and scanned.#DailyMovieSketch #AntMan #antmanandthewasp #ghost #hannahjohnkamen #pencil #pencilart#372 / 16-Aug-18

[#AnInchAugust × #DailyMovieSketch]District 9 (2009)Directed by Neill BlomkampSunday's theme for #AnInchAugust (a challenge to make art that fits in one square inch) was ‘Home Sweet Home’ and that led me to think of this movie from Neill Blomkamp. After all, the story involves an alien spaceship coming to Earth and its inhabitants getting stranded as refugees for years, on our planet. The alien Christopher Johnson has been searching for a way to get back home, gathering fuel to do so.The science fiction – action movie has some incredible visual effects and amazing action scenes. Highly recommended. It's there on Netflix.A few months back, I did sketches of Neill Blomkamp’s Oats Studios short films, he has announced that new content is on its way. Can’t wait! This drawing of one of the aliens (derogatorily called ‘prawns’) was done with my 0.5mm 2B pencil and @prismacolor pencils on paper, and scanned.#district9 #prawn #christopherjohnson #pencilart #miniatureart #oatsstudios#371 / 13-Aug-18

[#AnInchAugust × #DailyMovieSketch | Drawing of @adivisesh from #Goodachari]Goodachari (2018)Directed by Sashi Kiran TikkaI had been hearing good things about this movie, and also had enjoyed Adivi Sesh's earlier movie "Kshanam" (directed by Ravikanth Perepu), so was eager to watch it. I saw it on Friday night at PVR ICON Hitech City. Not to give away any of the twists in the movie, I'll just summarise the information in the trailer. Arjun (Adivi Sesh) joins a top secret spy organisation called Trinethra, and is framed for being a terrorist, and goes on the run. Refreshingly, the story (by Adivi Sesh himself) is not just limited to this but has good content and keeps one engaged throughout. Sobhita Dhulipala (@sobhitad) plays Sameera, Arjun's love interest, and there were definitely Gautham Menon vibes in this story track. The movie is well done, with some nice action scenes, and as I mentioned, it's entertaining throughout. Enjoyed seeing Prakash Raj and Anish Kuruvilla (@yohaninsta) on screen too. Do watch it.I drew Adivi Sesh from the movie, and it's part of #AnInchAugust where the challenge is to create art in a square inch. The drawing was done with my 0.5mm 2B mechanical pencil and scanned.#adivisesh #goodachari #pencilart#miniatureart #370 / 12-Aug-18

[#AnInchAugust × #DailyMovieSketch — Drawing of @mipalkarofficial from #Karwaan]Karwaan (2018)Directed by Akarsh Khurana (@akvarious)It has been a busy time at work so I couldn’t catch this movie on the weekend, but I did see it on Tuesday night and really liked it.This is a road movie that opens with Avinash (Dulquer Salmaan) getting the news that his father has died in an accident. A clerical error results in the body being dispatched to Tahira (Amala Akkineni) in Kochi, and Tahira’s mother’s body (she also died in the same accident) being sent to Avinash in Bengaluru. Avinash and his friend Shaukat (Irrfan Khan) decide to drive to Kochi to exchange the bodies, and pick up Tahira’s daughter Tanya (Mithila Palkar) on the way. It sounds rather morbid that the movie's plot is set in motion by two corpses, but this is a rather sweet comedy-drama.The performances from the three leads are really nuanced, the music and cinematography are great too. While “Karwaan” didn’t offer anything greatly different in a road movie, it's Kerala setting is something you don't normally get to see. One plot thread involving Shaukat’s ‘love at first sight’ felt a bit out of place, but without that his character wouldn't have an arc.The story for the movie is by “Shaitan”, “David” and “Wazir” director Bejoy Nambiar. Overall, a very good movie, recommended to watch.Tanya's college hostel building is named after Father Lankester Merrin, the character from “The Exorcist”! I guess I’m behind by a day on this #AnInchAugust challenge, where the goal is to make drawings that fit in one square inch. I'll catch up over the weekend. I’ve wanted to draw a portrait of actress Mithila Palkar for a while, got the opportunity to do so now, along with a review for this movie. The drawing was done with 0.5mm 2B mechanical pencil and @prismacolor (that yellow part is supposed to be a flower, which she holds in the scene this frame is from) pencil on paper, and scanned.I’m also posting a photo of this drawing from my sketchbook on my main account @karthikabhiram.#karwaan #mithilapalkar #irrfankhan #dulquersalmaan#pencilart#miniatureart#369 / 9-Aug-18

[#AnInchAugust × #DailyMovieSketch]Venom (2018)Directed by Ruben FleischerSecond #AnInchAugust sketch for the day (this is a challenge where the goal is to create art that fits in one square inch). This is a drawing of Tom Hardy being taken over by the alien symbiote Venom, from the upcoming movie. The new trailer that was released a few days ago was good and showed quite a bit of the creature, which was kind of kept under wraps in earlier trailers. I'm just hoping that they didn't show too much of the good stuff from the movie in the trailers already. Also, is it just me, or are others also not very convinced about the tone of the movie? I'm being cautiously optimistic, but I was hoping for a serious R-rated movie, which doesn't seem to be the case. Let's see what it's like when the movie hits in October. The drawing was done with my 0.5mm 2B mechanical pencil on paper and scanned.#venom #tomhardy #pencilart #miniatureart#368 / 7-Aug-18

[#AnInchAugust × #DailyMovieSketch]mother! (2017)Directed by Darren AronofskyI watched "mother!" this weekend on Amazon Prime, and I really liked it. This is the kind of movie that's not for everyone, as what is going on in the movie is not clearly explained. It is set in this huge rustic house in the middle of the woods, the only two people living there are a poet (Javier Bardem) and his wife (Jennifer Lawrence). Their tranquil life is interrupted by visitors who come to the house. There is a mystery around the entire setting as the house they live in seems to have a life of its own.I thought the movie was beautifully made, with great acting (especially from Lawrence as she is on screen most of the time) and cinematography (by Matthew @libatique, shot on a mix of 16mm and 35mm film). There are some sudden bursts of violence/nudity. I had an interpretation of the movie which I later confirmed was the right one. With that context I was able to appreciate the movie. I drew Jennifer Lawrence, didn't get her likeness correctly. I need to work on this, getting the facial features right in a small drawing like this. This is part of #AnInchAugust where the challenge is to make drawings that fit in one square inch. I've done one more as well (day 6 and 7), will post that in a few hours time. This was drawn with 0.5mm 2B mechanical pencil and scanned.#mother #jenniferlawrence #darrenaronofsky#pencilart #miniatureart#367 / 7-Aug-18

[#AnInchAugust × #DailyMovieSketch]Pulp Fiction (1994)Directed by Quentin TarantinoToday’s entry for the #AnInchAugust challenge (where the goal is to make art that fits in one square inch) is special, in that there’s a theme. The challenge’s hosts @tiny.sharma10 and @architect_m_ announced that for Sunday, the theme was food. What came to mind immediately was this scene from “Pulp Fiction” (which is one of my all time favourite movies), where we are introduced to the Big Kahuna Burger, which would feature again in Tarantino’s works.Jules (Samuel L Jackson) and Vincent (John Travolta) attempt to retrieve a briefcase from lowlife thugs one morning, and the first part of the scene is centred around this burger, and a conversation with Brett (Frank Whaley). The drawing was done with my 0.5mm 2B mechanical pencil and @prismacolor pencils on paper, and scanned.#bigkahunaburger #pulpfiction #jules #burger #food #miniatureart #pencilart#366 / 5-Aug-18

[#AnInchAugust × #DailyMovieSketch]The Animatrix – Kid’s Story (2003)Directed by Shinichiro WatanabeContinuing the #AnInchAugust challenge, where the goal is to make drawings that fit in one square inch, I did this drawing based on one of my favourite segments in “The Animatrix” (a set of 9 animated short films set in the world of “The Matrix”) — “Kid's Story”. This tells the story of the Kid in “The Matrix Revolutions”, and how he knew that something was wrong with the world. I loved the animation style and the music (the short features ‘Who Am I’ by Peace Orchestra). This drawing was done with 0.5mm 2B mechanical pencil and @Prismacolor pencils on paper, and scanned.#thematrix #theanimatrix #kidsstory #shinichirowatanabe #pencilart #miniatureart #anime #365 / 4-Aug-18

[#AnInchAugust × #DailyMovieSketch]The Matrix Revolutions (2003)Directed by The WachowskisPicking up from yesterday's artwork for the #AnInchAugust challenge (where the goal is to make art that fits in an inch square), since I re-watched the Matrix movies recently, today's post is from the third movie in the trilogy, “The Matrix Revolutions”. This film picks up directly where “Reloaded” ended, and continues to build up Agent Smith (Hugo Weaving) as the antithesis of Neo / The One (Keanu Reeves), as someone who is all powerful and is spreading through the Matrix. Also, the onslaught of the machine army continues and the Sentinels will reach the human city of Zion in a few hours. Neo in the mean time, intends to end the War. “Reloaded” and “Revolutions” are interesting films, perhaps they don't reach the greatness and efficiency of the first film, but they are good movies and the Wachowskis' vision still stands out. This is a drawing of Agent Smith in the gold Matrix code that Neo sees. It was drawn with 0.5 mm 2B mechanical pencil and @prismacolor pencils on paper, and scanned.#364 / 2-Aug-18#matrix #thematrix #thematrixrevolutions #agentsmith #pencilart #miniatureart
