Southland Tales (2006)Directed by Richard KellyI am a fan of director Richard Kelly's debut, "Donnie Darko". A blend of science fiction and teen drama, it had a very unique vibe. It's a movie that one won't understand at first, reading articles about it explaining concepts of time travel and tangent universes, enables one to really appreciate it. The movie was a cult hit and Kelly's second project, "Southland Tales", a story comprising 6 chapters (3 told in graphic novel form, and the last 3 in the movie) was anticipated. The movie wasn't received well at its Cannes premiere in 2006 leading Kelly to eliminate some 15 min of footage and add narration explaining the plot better, and the theatrical cut was released in 2007. I watched the Cannes cut and re-watched the theatrical cut recently and thus decided to do a drawing based on it. "Southland Tales" has a sprawling plot and a huge ensemble cast. The storyline – after twin nuclear attacks in Texas in 2005, the world is pushed towards war. The US has become a police state, with USIdent monitoring all internet communications. In 2008 the Treer Corporation has developed an alternate energy source, Fluid Karma, which is causing a slowdown in the Earth's rotation, and has opened a rift in the fourth dimension (time). Porn star Krysta Now and actor Boxer Santaros have written a screenplay predicting the end of the world. The Neo Marxists want to bring down the government, while the world is being pushed towards an actual apocalypse. The movie is intriguing, the music by Moby really enhances the tone, which I liked very much. But I think Kelly was too ambitious, and in trying to say too much, the movie becomes annoying at times. Plot threads don't go anywhere, we don't get a clear explanation of what is happening, especially at the end, and the worst part is, characters overact, seemingly given direction to make their performances come off as amateurish.Still, it's worth watching and in my imaginary restrained version of the movie, it's played straight, explained better and is absolutely epic.I drew Sarah Michelle Gellar as Krysta. Drawn with 0.5mm 2B pencil and scanned.#350 / 31-May-18

Solo: A Star Wars Story (2018)Directed by Ron HowardThe "Star Wars" Anthology films are movies that sort of "fill in the blanks" between or are about characters from the main Episodic saga. The first of these was "Rogue One", released a couple of years ago, and this film, about a young Han Solo, is the second. The movie stars Alden Ehrenreich in the title role, made famous by Harrison Ford, and it is set some ten years before the storyline of Episode IV. Han is a young orphan on Corellia, who makes a living stealing hyperfuel and dealing with various gangs. He dreams of becoming a pilot, getting his own ship and leaving Corellia with his girlfriend Qi'ra (Emilia Clarke). You could look at the movie as a kind of heist film, that also introduces us to some new characters and shows how Han met his buddies Chewbacca and Lando Calrissian.I found this movie to be entertaining and well made but ultimately unmemorable. It looks very nice (the cinematography is by "Arrival" DOP Bradford Young), is well acted, and has some well executed action scenes. The thing is, it all feels like a very efficient product. Almost everything that one would expect to see is there, sort of by the numbers, and I found myself forgetting things almost immediately after leaving the theatre. It's not that I didn't like the movie, but I felt "Rogue One" for example, was more inventive. "Solo" is definitely good but not a great Star Wars movie. This movie was initially a project under the helm of directors Phil Lord and Christopher Miller (the "21" and "22 Jump Street" guys, who also did "The Lego Movie"), who left the project due to creative differences with the studio, which led to Ron Howard coming on board and finishing it.I drew Donald Glover a.k.a. Childish Gambino as the charismatic Lando Calrissian from the movie. This was drawn with 0.5mm 2B pencil on Brustro sketchbook and scanned. Thank you to all of you who watched me drawing this Live yesterday, the video has been uploaded to YouTube. I spent about 30 min more on the drawing after the 84 min live session, so this would've taken totally around 2 hours to draw.#349 / 27-May-18#dailymoviesketch #soloastarwarsstory

X-Men Origins: Wolverine (2009)Directed by Gavin HoodIn both Deadpool movies, they make fun of the fact that Ryan Reynolds actually starred as Wade Wilson / Deadpool in 2009's "X-Men Origins: Wolverine". The portrayal of the character received criticism for them sewing the mouth shut, of a character referred to as the Merc with a Mouth. In that movie Wade is talkative, but Deadpool isn't. Also, the name Deadpool is given because they pool together powers of other mutants in him. Apparently, for Deadpool in that movie, Ryan Reynolds only portrayed the character in close up shots, and in action scenes it's actually Scott Adkins.I drew the 2009 version of Deadpool from that movie. This was drawn with 0.5mm 2B pencil and @prismacolor pencil (the red parts) on Brustro sketchbook and scanned.#348 / 24-May-18#dailymoviesketch #deadpool #wadewilson #ryanreynolds #wolverine #xmen #xmenorigins #pencilart

Bohemian Rhapsody (2018)Directed by Bryan Singer and Dexter FletcherA few days back, the trailer for this biopic on Queen was released, and it was a terrific trailer, incorporating classic songs by the band. The show seems to be stolen by Rami Malek as Freddie Mercury. I was reading about the movie and it said that Bryan Singer worked on 2/3rds of the film and it was a really good one, but he was let go from the project. Dexter Fletcher completed the rest of the film and whose credit will be on the released film is unknown.I'm looking forward to the movie nevertheless. I drew Rami Malek from the trailer, the sketch was done with my 0.5mm 2B pencil on Brustro sketchbook and scanned.#347 / 20-May-18

[#NOSPOILERS]Deadpool 2 (2018)Directed by David LeitchI've done multiple sketches based on this movie (almost everytime the studio released a trailer!), and was very excited to see it. Seen it twice so far, once yesterday and again this morning and I loved it.Time travelling soldier from the future, Cable (Josh Brolin) is wanting to kill a 14 year old mutant (Julian Dennison), and Deadpool must stop him. To do so, he puts together a team called the X-Force.This makes it sound like a run-of-the-mill sequel, but it's not. There are certain aspects of the story that are predictable (reminded me of one movie in particular, which I'll name in the first comment on this post), but the filmmakers find ways to subvert our expectations and add interesting elements to it. I thought it was well written (Ryan Reynolds is credited as co-writer this time). There's a lot to love about this movie – it's very, very entertaining with lots of jokes and references. It gets surprisingly emotional and touching at times too. The acting and soundtrack choices were great as well.Part 2 had almost double the budget of the first movie, and it shows – this feels more bigger and elaborate. I loved the violent and brutal action scenes, courtesy "John Wick" co-director David Leitch. They used Deadpool's regenerative powers in creative ways in the action scenes as well. There are a couple of blink-and-you'll-miss-it surprises, so do watch keenly. And there is a clever mid-credits scene (no post-credits scene). I loved the opening credits sequence too.Overall, I enjoyed the movie very much and I liked it better than the first film. Highly recommended watching. The version of the movie we got in India is rated "A" but I think it had only mild censorship, as far as I could tell. Only a couple of instances of muted dialogue, and I couldn't make out if any of the violence was cut. This is a sketch of Peter from the movie, who joins the X-Force team just after seeing the ad, though he doesn't have any superpowers (there is a Twitter and LinkedIn profile for Peter as well!). Drawn with 0.5mm 2B pencil and @Prismacolor pencils on Brustro sketchbook and scanned.#346 / 18-May-18

Captain America: Civil War (2016)Directed by Anthony and Joe RussoBirthday Drawing! Yesterday, 15-May-18, was my birthday, and I re-watched "Captain America: Civil War", as it recently came on Netflix. It's such a well made movie. The action, story, pacing, character conflicts, drama are all very well done, and the acting from all is great. Certainly, "Avengers: Infinity War" was in safe hands with the Russo Brothers at the helm. The movie made you care for all the characters and gave plausible motivations for Team Tony and Team Cap. This was pretty much an "Avengers Part 2.5", considering the scope.I realised I never did a proper drawing of possibly the biggest star in the entire MCU, so did this drawing yesterday. Robert Downey Jr made the role of Tony Stark / Iron Man his own. The drawing was done with my 0.5mm 2B mechanical pencil on Brustro sketchbook and scanned.I started this drawing yesterday, but only finished it today. Still, I'll consider it a Birthday drawing!#345 / 16-May-18#dailymoviesketch #ironman #tonystark #captainamerica #civilwar #avengers #infinitywar #avengersinfinitywar #marvel #mcu #pencil #pencilart #worldofnerdart @worldofnerdart

[#NOSPOILERS POST – PART OF THIS CONTENT IS TAKEN FROM MY POST YESTERDAY ON @karthikabhiram]Avengers: Infinity War (2018)Directed by Anthony and Joe Russo "Have you ever seen this really old movie "Aliens"?" I watched "Avengers: Infinity War" for the second time a couple of days ago. I booked in 2D this time, and in one of the new PVR Cinemas that has opened – this is in Panjagutta, in Next Galleria Mall. I loved the movie, of course, and probably now, rewatching all those moments and great scenes, confirmed this as a 10/10 movie for me. By now though since many people have seen it more than once, the audience participation was less. There is a certain charm in seeing it early, or on opening day, and participating in the hooting and cheering. This time watching in 2D and that too in a new theatre, the image quality was bright and excellent. One can appreciate the CG work on Thanos better – though at some points the CG was not as good as in other places, when it was on, it was on and how! You could make out so many details and nuanced expressions on his face. I could also make out some of the swear words that were muted, more than the first time I saw it! (Yes, although no scenes are cut in India, our Censor board has muted some of the swear words, and they blurred Star-Lord showing the finger.) Also, I observed something that I missed the first time that @newrockstars pointed out – the post credits scene has only one cut – after the two characters get out of the car, the rest of the scene is a single take. Next, once this movie comes out on digital, I would like to see it in the IMAX aspect ratio (at Hyderabad we got the 2.35:1 version only and not the Digital IMAX 1.9:1 version). I drew Spider-Man in his Iron Spider suit. He was one of my favourite characters from the movie and Tom Holland's acting was great. The drawing was done with @Prismacolor pencils, 0.5mm 2B pencil on Brustro sketchbook and scanned. One bit of trivia: Spider-Man making a reference to a James Cameron movie is interesting, because I believe Cameron worked on a Spider-Man movie in the 1990s, elements of which made it to the 2002 Sam Raimi version. #344 / 10-May-18

Altered Carbon (2018)Created by Laeta KalogridisI watched this Netflix show a couple of months ago, but didn't get around to doing a sketch based on it till now. The show is set in the far future, almost 400 years from now. In this world, it is possible to download a person's consciousness into what is called a stack, a device attached to the spine at the base of the neck. This makes bodies simply "sleeves" for a person, and if one is rich enough, they can practically live forever, by resleeving themselves indefinitely. One such super rich "meth", Laurens Bancroft, gets soldier Takeshi Kovacs resleeved into a new body after over 250 years on ice, and asks him to solve Laurens's own murder – someone destroyed his stack as well as his sleeve, but thanks to his stack being backed up, he lives but has no memory of 48 hours, the time during which the murder happened. The show is 10 episodes long and I really loved it. It has fascinating ideas, blending those with a cyberpunk feel, noir mystery and action. The show features some kickass action choreography. It's definitely not for kids as it features a good helping of violence and nudity (there is even a very well done fight scene with one female character completely naked). The production values are high, the show looks awesome. Highly recommended for any science fiction fan. I drew Joel Kinnaman from the show, this is a still from the trailer showing the sleeve that he inhabits as Takeshi Kovacs, in the present timeline of the show. The drawing was done with 0.5mm 2B pencil on Brustro sketchbook and scanned. #343 / 7-May-18#DailyMovieSketch #alteredcarbon #takeshikovacs #stack #sleeve #pencildrawing #pencilsketch #pencil #pencilart #artistsofinstagram #artistsoninstagram #netflix #cyberpunk

Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back (1980)Directed by Irvin KershnerI'm a day late in saying this, but Happy Star Wars Day! (May 4) I wanted to complete this drawing and post it yesterday, but managed to finish it only today.I was thinking of what to draw for the occasion, and I realised that I haven't drawn Yoda here before, so I picked that. This also reminded me of Spider-Man from "Captain America: Civil War" – his dialogue "Hey guys! You ever see that really old movie? "Empire Strikes Back"?". The drawing was done with 0.5mm 2B and @Prismacolor pencils on paper and scanned.#342 / 5-May-18#StarWarsDay #MayThe4thBeWithYou #MayThe4th #Yoda #StarWars #Empire #TheEmpireStrikesBack #Prismacolor #pencil#dailymoviesketch
