Solo: A Star Wars Story (2018)Directed by Ron HowardThe "Star Wars" Anthology films are movies that sort of "fill in the blanks" between or are about characters from the main Episodic saga. The first of these was "Rogue One", released a couple of years ago, and this film, about a young Han Solo, is the second. The movie stars Alden Ehrenreich in the title role, made famous by Harrison Ford, and it is set some ten years before the storyline of Episode IV. Han is a young orphan on Corellia, who makes a living stealing hyperfuel and dealing with various gangs. He dreams of becoming a pilot, getting his own ship and leaving Corellia with his girlfriend Qi'ra (Emilia Clarke). You could look at the movie as a kind of heist film, that also introduces us to some new characters and shows how Han met his buddies Chewbacca and Lando Calrissian.I found this movie to be entertaining and well made but ultimately unmemorable. It looks very nice (the cinematography is by "Arrival" DOP Bradford Young), is well acted, and has some well executed action scenes. The thing is, it all feels like a very efficient product. Almost everything that one would expect to see is there, sort of by the numbers, and I found myself forgetting things almost immediately after leaving the theatre. It's not that I didn't like the movie, but I felt "Rogue One" for example, was more inventive. "Solo" is definitely good but not a great Star Wars movie. This movie was initially a project under the helm of directors Phil Lord and Christopher Miller (the "21" and "22 Jump Street" guys, who also did "The Lego Movie"), who left the project due to creative differences with the studio, which led to Ron Howard coming on board and finishing it.I drew Donald Glover a.k.a. Childish Gambino as the charismatic Lando Calrissian from the movie. This was drawn with 0.5mm 2B pencil on Brustro sketchbook and scanned. Thank you to all of you who watched me drawing this Live yesterday, the video has been uploaded to YouTube. I spent about 30 min more on the drawing after the 84 min live session, so this would've taken totally around 2 hours to draw.#349 / 27-May-18#dailymoviesketch #soloastarwarsstory
