[#DailyMovieSketch × #Inktober #Inktober2019] @inktoberSamurai Cop 2: Deadly Vengeance (2015)Directed by Gregory HatanakaThis movie is a sequel to the "so-bad-it's-good" movie "Samurai Cop", made with a very low budget in 1991. The first movie was discovered several years later and has become a minor cult favourite for all its flaws. In 2015, a sequel came out because of fans' interest.The sequel while still a low budget film, had much better production values than the original, and has better acting (from the principals at least) than the first. Still, it's only for people who want to watch this type of stuff, not for everyone. The whole film has this very garish look, the plot is all over the place which leads one to think they actually had lot of things planned, but because of budgetary or other limitations, they didn't include them in the movie. Many characters and story elements are introduced and then dropped, about all I can make out about the story is that it's about warring gangs but I didn't find it that interesting. Most of the female characters are played by adult film actresses. Tommy Wiseau is in the movie and his insane overacting was annoying to me. But overall, I didn't regret watching this, it's certainly a very unusual experience! The movie is available to watch online on TubiTV (which is where I watched it). Yesterday I had attended an Art Workshop by @keshrt, and a brush pen was included as part of the materials we used there. He encouraged participants to sketch a lot, and sketch what one wanted to get good at drawing. I thought I'd try a couple of quick sketches with the pen, so did this. I was initially thinking of not posting these, as they're quickly done and not very good, but I decided to go ahead anyway.I drew Mathew Karedas and Kayden Kross as Joe and Jennifer from the movie. After all, one of the #ExplainAFilmPlotBadly versions of "Endgame" said that it's a group of friends coming together after years to pull off a jewelry heist.The movie of course is excellent, and has since become one of the most successful movies of all time. I already wrote about it a few months before here, along with sketches, and I loved the movie. It's epic, dramatic and deserving of all the praise.I drew Thanos from the beginning of the movie, where he tells the Avengers that he "used the stones to destroy the stones". [#DailyMovieSketch × #Inktober #Inktober2019] @inktoberKill Bill: Vol 2 (2004)Directed by Quentin TarantinoFor the Inktober prompt word "legend", I thought of the character Pai Mei from Quentin Tarantino's "Kill Bill". Pai Mei (played by Gordon Liu) is a legendary martial arts master who taught Bill in the movie, there is also a training montage sequence where he trains Uma Thurman's "The Bride" character. This is done in the style of 1970s/80s martial arts movies, wonderfully shot (the cinematography uses these whip pans, crash zooms, and is beautifully lit). One of Pai Mei's techniques is the "five point palm exploding heart technique", which sounds really absurd but is used to great dramatic effect in the movie. I absolutely love "Kill Bill". It was released as two movies, but intended to be one long story – called "Kill Bill: The Whole Bloody Affair" (I hope to see this integrated cut one day). [#DailyMovieSketch × #Inktober #Inktober2019] @inktoberEvil Dead II (1987)Directed by Sam RaimiFor the Inktober prompt word "ash", I thought of the character Ash Williams played by Bruce Campbell, from Sam Raimi's "Evil Dead" movies and TV show.I love everything "Evil Dead" – the films are very well made, each being very different in their own way. The low budget "The Evil Dead" was a nightmarish horror film, with the bigger budgeted "Evil Dead II" being a sort of reboot/sequel, blending horror and slapstick comedy, and "Army of Darkness" veering more into comedy/fantasy territory. More than 20 years after that we were fortunate to get a three season TV show "Ash vs Evil Dead". All of them have Raimi's signature style and feature Bruce Campbell in the most memorable role of his career – the sometimes heroic, sometimes idiotic, sometimes brave, sometimes cowardly Ash, fighting off an ancient evil.The most representative of what "Evil Dead" is, is the second film, which has a lot of gore and splatter (but the tone is not as nightmarish as the original) and hilarious goofy jokes. This is from the scene where Ash's hand gets possessed and starts beating him up, something he takes care of by cutting it off with a chainsaw, saying "Who's laughing now"! This was a US-HK coproduction and was very successful worldwide, and is an entertaining action movie with James Bond-esque elements, with Bruce Lee as a martial artist sent as an undercover agent to participate in a martial arts tournament held by Han (Shih Kien) on his island. The tournament is a front for Han's drugs and prostitution activities, which Lee is sent in to bust. It's a stylish movie with John Saxon and Jim Kelly also starring as the good guys. I love the music by Lalo Schifrin.I drew Bruce Lee from the scene in which he fights Oharra (Bob Wall). Oharra tries to show off his fighting skills by breaking a wooden board with his fist, to which Bruce Lee replies "boards don't hit back". [#DailyMovieSketch × #Inktober #Inktober2019] @inktoberJoker (2019)Directed by Todd PhillipsFor the Inktober prompt word "frail", I decided to do a sketch based on the new "Joker" movie, as one can relate the word to it in more ways than one.The movie was released in India two days before its US release date (Oct 2 as opposed to Oct 4) and I watched it then. This was a highly anticipated movie and to me, it did not disappoint.The movie offers an origin story for the DC Comics villain, and it's a standalone film not part of an existing movie / TV / comics continuity, so more like a one-shot comic book. It follows the mentally frail Arthur Fleck (Joaquin Phoenix) in early 1980s grimy Gotham City, who works as a clown and aspires to be a standup comedian, and shows us how circumstances and the way society treats him, leads him into a downward spiral. There are three things that stood out for me, about this movie – the first is obviously Joaquin Phoenix's fantastic performance in the lead role, he is on screen almost throughout the movie and his portrayal is scary and evokes sympathy at the same time. The second is the gorgeous cinematography by Todd Phillips' frequent collaborator Lawrence Sher, and the third is the music score by Hildur Guðnadóttir. Since much of the film is shown to us through Fleck's point of view, there's an "unreliable narrator" aspect to it which I liked also. However, the general mean spirited tone of the movie and many of the characters mean that this is not really an "entertaining" movie to watch. One negative thing for me, if you take away the central role / performance, I felt the story doesn't offer too much depth beyond that. It's a very good movie though, no doubt, must watch.I drew Joaquin Phoenix as Arthur from one of the scenes in the movie, while you may think that this visual was made for the poster, it's actually in the movie itself.
