Annihilation (2018)Directed by Alex GarlandAfter coming to attention as a writer ("28 Days Later", "Dredd"), Alex Garland made a terrific directorial debut with "Ex Machina". I was therefore eagerly waiting to see his latest effort, "Annihilation". The movie got a theatrical release in the US, but was distributed by Netflix in other countries (apparently the studio got cold feet, thinking that a deliberate science fiction movie led by a mostly female cast may not be very commercial). I'm happy to have seen it either way, as it's a really good movie.The story concerns a team of scientists who go into an area called The Shimmer, a literally shimmering zone with strange properties. The Shimmer started with a meteorite crash, and has been expanding, threatening to annihilate life on earth as we know it.I loved the movie, I thought it was very well made, with a good blend of science fiction and horror elements. I was reminded of "Lost", Michael Crichton's "Sphere", and possibly even "Arrival" and "2001". All of those are very different works of course, but some aspects of this movie evolve similar reactions as those others.The acting, cinematography are all great, the story is engaging, and there are some genuinely unsettling moments (one scene with a bear creature in particular). Highly recommended. I drew Natalie Portman as Lena from the movie. Like the previous two drawings, this was also drawn with 0.5mm 2B pencil on Brustro sketchbook and scanned, and is also the size of a ₹2coin. Rangasthalam (2018)Directed by B SukumarI watched "Rangasthalam" in Bhimavaram a couple of days back, after hearing a lot about it. The movie is set in 1980s in the titular fictional village. We are introduced to multiple characters, each well developed and very well acted including Ram Charan as Chitti Babu, who is hard of hearing. His brother returns to the village only to find that the President (Jagapathi Babu) and Society literally rule over the villagers, and decides to run for President, which might put his life in danger.Story wise, the movie is a rather straightforward village drama. But, what sets this movie apart is the way it is put together and the effort that has gone into world building. At almost three hours long the movie does take its time to set up characters and situations. But it is all done to create a believable environment. The movie looks gorgeous, the cinematography and production design are terrific. There is tremendous attention to detail, there are some frames with so many elements and characters in them. The acting is uniformly excellent and Ram Charan is outstanding.I would need to re-watch "1 Nenokkadine" to be sure, but I enjoyed that and the more recent "Nannaku Prematho" more than this. Still, this is a very well made film, highly recommended. I drew Ram Charan as Chitti Babu from the movie. A Quiet Place (2018)Directed by John KrasinskiI watched this movie on a recent trip to Vijayawada, and I went in pretty much cold. I hadn't seen the trailer, and had only the plot synopsis on the BookMyShow app to go by. Probably, that worked better towards my enjoyment of the movie.The setup is simple but intriguing. It is a few years in the future. Most of humanity has been wiped out by creatures that are sensitive to sound. Survivors have to literally not make any noise, using sign language to communicate. The movie follows a family in this situation.The movie is taut, and at a 91 minute running time, is extremely efficient. It is very well made, with great cinematography and acting. For a movie using sound as a critical element of the plot, the sound design is fantastic – balancing silence and sound beautifully. Rarely have I seen a movie that actually makes the audience wary of making a sound, lest something important is missed. This is a movie that deserves to be seen in a theatre, without distraction. I enjoyed it very much. Do go see it, while it is a horror movie, the focus is more on building suspense and tension than jump scares. I drew Emily Blunt from the movie. I'm posting this picture on both my accounts @karthikabhiram and @dailymoviesketch. If you've been following me you probably know that I was travelling the major part of last week. That's why I wasn't able to draw anything new till now.On the recent travel though, I watched two very good movies, John Krasinski's "A Quiet Place" at Capital Cinemas Vijayawada, and Sukumar's "Rangasthalam" at AVG Cinemas Bhimavaram. Before travelling, I had also watched Alex Garland's "Annihilation" on Netflix. Wanted to do small drawings of all three, have done two so far.Will scan these two and post them soon, on @dailymoviesketch along with my reviews of the movies. Please catch "A Quiet Place" in theatres soon, it's really good and deserves to be seen on a big screen with a good sound system. Today I'm very happy that this account has completed 2 years!It has been an outlet for me to share my artwork and also write about movies. I have improved my skill – still a lot of scope for improvement, I hope to do better in the future! Sincere thanks to everyone who has supported my work! [Drawing of @ranadaggubati holding the Infinity Gauntlet] Avengers: Infinity War (2018)Directed by Joe and Anthony RussoSo it's April, and the release of @avengers: #InfinityWar is only a few weeks away. Recently, there was news that Rana Daggubati would be dubbing the voice of Thanos, for the Telugu version of the movie. Marvel India released a Telugu trailer (the "There was an idea" one), and I thought the dubbing job was really good (superior to the Hindi trailers of this movie and Deadpool 2). Before the trailer actually begins, there's a shot of Rana holding the Infinity Gauntlet.I chose to draw that for #DailyMovieSketch.
