Ida (2013)Directed by Pawel PawlikowskiI watched this movie as part of a screening by Cinephiles Film Club (you can follow the page on FB) on Friday. This is a Polish movie and won the Best Foreign Language Film Oscar in 2014. It's set in the 1960s, and is about an orphaned girl, who is in a convent and is going to soon take her vows to become a nun. However, she is told that she is of Jewish descent, and that her real name is Ida, and she has an aunt. Her aunt is the only surviving family member, and she goes to live with her, before taking her vows. The movie is about Ida experiencing a life outside the convent and trying to find out more about her family.First of all, I must say that I found the movie very, very, slow moving. I personally didn't connect with it and didn't enjoy watching it at all because of the slow pace. The acting and the technical aspects were good though. I especially enjoyed the cinematography – every shot was carefully composed, and this is one of those movies where you could literally just pull any frame and it'd look great as a photo by itself. The movie is filmed in black and white and in a 1.33:1 aspect ratio (@imdb says it was shot on the Arri Alexa Plus 4:3). I found the compositions used interesting – in certain frames, the background was symmetrical, but the subject (the actors in the frame) were placed at the bottom left or right corners with a lot of space above. That's obviously deliberate, but it's certainly unlike anything I've seen before. However, as much as I liked the cinematography, that didn't keep my interest for the rest of the movie. It probably might improve on a second viewing, but I doubt that I'd want to watch it again.I drew actress Agata Trzebuchowska as Ida from the movie, from one of the frames I really liked. It was done in pencil and scanned.#248 / 16-Apr-17

Thor: Ragnarok (2017)Directed by Taika Waititi "He's a friend from work!" The trailer for the upcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe movie "Thor: Ragnarok" dropped quite as a surprise, and it's a real fun trailer, set to Led Zeppelin's "Immigrant Song". It doesn't reveal too many details about the plot but ends by showing Thor in a gladiatorial fight against a familiar opponent. I liked Chris Hemsworth's shorter hair look here so I drew it. This is a pencil drawing that I scanned and posted. The red streaks are done in colour pencil. We have "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2" and "Spider-Man: Homecoming" to look forward to before this one, and although I've not liked the other "Thor" movies so much, this one looks like it'll be a lot of fun (plus Benedict Cumberbatch will be in it as Doctor Strange, at least in one scene). #247 / 14-Apr-17

[Available to purchase as a T-shirt through @paintcollar!] The drawing of Kattappa from "Baahubali 2"'s trailer which I did, has been uploaded to @paintcollar and is available to purchase as a T-shirt. You can check out that and my other work at http://paintcollar.com/karthikabhiram. I had already posted the scanned version of this sketch earlier (and the @baahubalimovie official Instagram account had reposted it as well). So now I'm posting a photo here, and I posted the scan on my other account @karthikabhiram.

Breaking Bad (2008-2013)I recently started watching "Breaking Bad" (@amcbreakingbad) on Netflix. Currently, I am on Season 2, Episode 1 and am loving the show. It's very well written and acted and I'm eager to see where they take it. The plot of a chemistry teacher diagnosed with inoperable lung cancer and turning to cooking crystal meth is interesting and I love the two leads – the actors as well as the characters – Bryan Cranston as Walter White / Heisenberg and Aaron Paul as Jesse Pinkman. So I drew Walter from the show. This was a much requested drawing that people wanted to see here and I finally did it 🙂 This is a 2B pencil drawing on paper, scanned and edited in Photoshop. I think this is one of my best drawings. #246 / 9-Apr-17

This isn't strictly a #DailyMovieSketch drawing, but it's an illustration I did for @chilisindia #ArtOfTheBurger. Check out their page, where they've posted this artwork. I thought I'd put up a larger version of the drawing. This shows @nusr_et, the chef who shot to viral fame as #saltbae, working his magic on a burger. I drew it in pencil, the colour in the burger was added in Photoshop.

#DAILYMOVIESKETCH COMPLETES ONE YEAR! Last year in the month of April I had an idea to start an @instagram account for my artwork. Inspired by @inktober, I thought I'd make it an account where I post a drawing every day. Since I love movies, I decided that all these would be movie related sketches, and on 4-Apr-16 (4 × 4 = 16), I created @dailymoviesketch. A Facebook page followed a few days later. For around 4 months, I actually did one sketch every day, and posted them before midnight. I did sketches in other cities, on airplanes, on trains and in hotel rooms. After that I couldn't continue the daily schedule due to work, but I did do the #Inktober project in full this year (31 sketches, one for every day of October), something I never managed to do before. Now I've moved to posting once in every 2-3 days, but am making the sketches more detailed and posting scans as opposed to photos. And that brings us to today, which marks a whole year that this account has been online! I'd like to thank all my followers and friends for the tremendous support you've shown, it really motivates me to do better every time. It has been an incredible learning experience for me, still a long way to go. This is the 245th sketch here. The very first sketch I did was one of Uma Thurman as Mia Wallace from one of my all time favourite movies, Quentin Tarantino's "Pulp Fiction". I thought it'd be appropriate to mark this milestone also with a Mia Wallace drawing. So here you go! Drawn with 0.5mm 2B mechanical pencil on @cansonpaper, scanned and coloured in Photoshop. I'll post a photo of the drawing on @karthikabhiram.#245 / 4-Apr-17

Justice League (2017)Directed by Zack Snyder A few days ago, we got the first official trailer for "Justice League" (well, first trailer if you consider the earlier one as a Comic Con Teaser). I liked the trailer and the choice of music ("Come Together", but which version?). As a precursor to the release of the trailer, the studio released very short clips for each of the 5 main characters. The good part of it is that, the footage there didn't show up in the main trailer. I liked the way Diana / Wonder Woman (@GalGadot) looked in her teaser clip. So I drew her. This was drawn with Prismacolor pencils on Canson paper. I scanned the drawing and am posting it. #243 / 29-Mar-17

Death Note (2006-07 Anime Series) Directed by Tetsuro ArakiRecently a trailer was released for a US live action movie adaptation of this anime / manga series, so I thought I'd do a drawing based on the anime. The series follows high school student Light Yagami who comes across a "Death Note", a notebook in which anyone whose name is written will die. Once a human is in possession of a Death Note, he can see a Death God / Shinigami who would remain in the Earth realm till the Death Note is used or the human dies. Light sees the Shinigami Ryuk. He decides to use the Death Note to kill criminals, thus attracting the attention of the police and the mysterious detective L, who swears to catch Kira (the name given to the person behind the killings). This is a sketch of Ryuk. It was done with ballpoint pen, a black marker and colour pencils. This is an edited scan of the drawing. #242 / 28-Mar-17

Attended Hyderabad Artists Meetup today. It was great meeting everyone who came. I got to talk about @dailymoviesketch and show my sketchbooks, and it was great to see everyone else's work as well. Thanks to @collabhouse for organizing it. Do let me know who I have missed tagging on the photo and I'll tag. #VSCOCam #Canon #5DMarkIII
