Deadpool 2 (2018)Directed by David LeitchWhile everyone has been raving about the "Avengers: Infinity War" trailer and poster recently (I've been enjoying all the memes too – including some really funny Hindi and Telugu ones), there's another movie (a non-Marvel Marvel movie, for now) for which we were expecting a trailer to drop any day – and it's finally here! A few days ago, there was a worrying bit of news that "Deadpool 2" didn't perform well in test screenings. Then, word came out that it actually outscored the original, and that reshoots added more of what worked with test audiences. We'll know how it actually is on May 18, but this trailer is all kinds of fantastic! This is the first full trailer for "Deadpool 2", the ones that came out earlier were teasers with only a little actual footage from the movie. This one gives us an idea about the plot of the film – Cable (Josh Brolin) wanting to kill a kid and Deadpool stopping this, and the formation of the X-Force.Here are some things one can observe from this trailer – – Deadpool, Dopinder, Vanessa, Blind Al, Negasonic, Colossus, Weasel all back from the first film- "All out of Love" opening, DP entering Dopinder's cab- Deadpool chops and kicks a guy's head off- DP's comment about Cable, "What in the fucksickle is this"- Wade spinning in Prof X's wheelchair, in a hall with portraits of Lincoln and Obama, the X-Mansion?- "We're going to form a super duper fucking crew, tough, morally flexible and young enough to carry their own franchise for 10 to 12 years. We'll be known as – X-Force!" to which Domino says "Isn't that a bit derivative?"- "Now, let's go get our fuck on!"- Deadpool in prison restraints hitting a guy's face with a concrete brick and saying "Tell me they got that in slow motion!"- Fighting dirty – a twist on the hole in the hand gag from the first movie- Deadpool wearing a jersey with the X symbol (which is what I drew here)- Wade discussing with Weasel that they probably won't make a 3Can't wait to see the movie! This drawing was done with 0.5mm 2B pencil and @prismacolor pencils on Brustro sketchbook and scanned.#330 / 23-Mar-18#DailyMovieSketch

Shaitaan Haveli (2018)Created by Varun ThakurStand-up comedian Varun Thakur created and stars in this Amazon Prime Web Series. This is an homage to the 1980s low budget pulp horror movies made by the Ramsay Brothers, and includes all the tropes one might expect – an old mansion, a witch, an ancient 200 year old evil, a sorcerer – and weaves it into a comedy-horror story. The storyline concerns down-on-his-luck director Hariman (Bhupesh Singh – who also sings the title track), who decides to shoot a horror movie hoping it will be a hit, in order to pay off his debt to gangster Ponty. So he assembles a cast and crew, and goes off to an abandoned mansion to shoot his film, but an emerging evil may threaten the lives of the crew. The show is pretty entertaining and emulates the source material quite well, right down to using plot themes and character names as well. While I enjoyed watching it, I thought they didn't push the comedy or horror elements enough. I did get the feeling at times, that they were trying to be funny but it didn't always work, especially when attempting to blend the 1980s tropes with more modern elements. I also thought it was kind of predictable at times. The best part of the series though, is that it's quite short – just 8 half-hour episodes. I completed it in just two sittings, so even if you don't find it that good, it goes by very quickly. The episodes credit Monica Gupta as "Chudail", I drew her. She looks quite like a deadite from Sam Raimi's "Evil Dead" movies. The drawing was done with 0.5mm 2B pencil, @prismacolor pencils and a white gel ink pen on my Brustro sketchbook, and scanned.A bit of trivia about this drawing is that, much of it was drawn at Annapurna Film Institute yesterday morning, footage of which would be part of a documentary project. More details on that eventually.#329 / 17-Mar-18#dailymoviesketch #shaitaanhaveli #amazonprime #chudail #bollywood #ramsaybrothers #varunthakur

Philip K Dick's Electric Dreams (2018)Developed by Ronald D Moore and Michael DinnerAmerican author Philip K Dick (referred to sometimes as PKD) has written stories that have been adapted into some of the most famous science fiction movies in the last 40 years, from "Blade Runner", to "Total Recall", "Minority Report" and others. "Electric Dreams" is a 10-episode anthology show, featuring loose adaptations from his stories. I watched the entire show on Amazon Prime, over the span of a few days, and enjoyed it a lot. The episodes are really well made and the ideas are really interesting. The name of the show is taken from the title of the book "Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep", the inspiration for "Blade Runner". When one watches the show, one can't help comparing it with "Black Mirror", but there's a difference. "Black Mirror" itself a brilliant show, is science fiction more oriented towards tech, whereas PKD's stories can take a step towards fantasy, with episodes featuring space travel for example. Themes of reality and identity are explored in these stories, and it makes for very interesting watching. Some episodes though, could easily have been part of either show. I would highly recommend watching this show, if you're a science fiction fan, you'll love it. I drew Holliday Grainger as Honor, a "Teep" (telepath), from the episode "The Hood Maker". It was drawn with 0.5mm 2B pencil and @Prismacolor pencil on Brustro sketchbook and scanned. #328 / 12-Mar-18

[Congratulations @realgdt @shapeofwatermovie on the Oscar wins! Here's my drawing based on the movie.] The Shape of Water (2017) Directed by Guillermo del ToroI watched this fantasy / drama / 1960s period piece a couple of weeks ago at the newly opened PVR ICON Cinema, Hitech City (you can find a post on my personal account @karthikabhiram regarding that). At that time, the movie hadn't yet won Best Picture at the 90th Academy Awards, but it was a film with 13 nominations. This is the story of a mute janitor Elisa (Sally Hawkins) in a US government run lab. One day, the lab staff brings in a humanoid amphibian creature, once a sea God, intending to experiment on it, with the intention of gaining advantage over the Russians. Elisa finds a connection with the creature, much to the chagrin of the antagonist, supervisor Strickland (Michael Shannon). The movie plays like a fairy tale, with gorgeous visuals and great performances. Were it not for some adult themes and bloody violence, one could easily mistake it for a movie intended for younger audiences. Guillermo del Toro has a great way of handling creatures in his movies, and here too, the creature effects are fantastic. The creature is played by Doug Jones and reminded me of Abe Sapien from "Hellboy". I liked the movie, but somehow I preferred del Toro's other movies, I remember I enjoyed "Hellboy" more than this one. Maybe that's just me but I didn't feel it was as good as the critical acclaim suggested. Still, I'm happy for the movie's Oscar win. I drew the amphibian from the movie. Like my earlier Deadpool drawing (for @yvonnecheeart's #thepennychallenge), I did this in a stippling style. This is a bit larger, the size of a 2 Rupee coin. A rough was done in pencil and I did the ink work on top of it. #327 / 7-Mar-18#DailyMovieSketch #theshapeofwater #guillermodeltoro #oscar #bestpicture #academyawards #bestdirector #theoscars

Black Panther (2018)Directed by Ryan CooglerThe eighteenth movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, "Black Panther" has been highly successful and critically acclaimed. I watched it a couple of weekends ago, but completed a sketch based on it only now. The movie stars Chadwick Boseman as T'Challa, who takes over as King of the African nation of Wakanda, after the death of his father T'Chaka (which we saw in 2016's "Captain America: Civil War"). The film builds the world of Wakanda really well, and then introduces the antagonist – Eric Killmonger (Michael B Jordan), who is working with Ulysses Klaue (Andy Serkis), and intends to take the throne from T'Challa. I thought the movie was terrific, and I felt it was a better Marvel movie than the recent few MCU entries – because of the world building, the characters (every character is interesting and the film has strong female characters), and the villain (not just an alien / hole in the sky kind of thing). The storyline is nicely complemented with beautiful visuals (cinematography, costumes and production design draw from a lot of influences), and music (memorable score and the songs too). I enjoyed the movie very much. Stay back for two end credits scenes. Can't wait for the next big event – "Avengers: Infinity War". I drew Letitia Wright (you might remember her also from the last episode of "Black Mirror" Season 4) as Shuri. She was one of my favourite characters from the movie. She is T'Challa's sister, a scientist, a James Bond-esque Q-type quartermaster, and a warrior all in one. The drawing was done with 0.5mm 2B pencil and @Prismacolor pencils and scanned. #326 / 4-Mar-18#blackpanther #marvel #mcu #marvelstudios #wakandaforever #avengers #DailyMovieSketch Also tagging this for @blackpanther's #blackpantherfanart and @letitiawright.

[My drawing of @reginaacassandraa from @prasanthvarma2.0's film #Awe. I had posted the in-progress sketch a few days back, she was kind enough to post it on her @instagram story. Here is the finished drawing. It took more time to complete, as I was traveling the last few days.] Awe! (2018)This movie had been getting good word of mouth since its release the Friday before last, and I watched it last week. It's best to go into this movie without knowing too many details. Suffice to say, it has an ensemble cast and follows multiple characters through different storylines. Kajal Aggarwal is a woman who is apparently disturbed about something, you have Priyadarshi playing a chef, Nithya Menen meeting someone at a restaurant, a Magician, Regina Cassandra playing a junkie, Srinivas Avasarla playing a dabbler in science. These storylines get resolved in interesting and unexpected ways, and manage to involve multiple genres – drama, comedy, science fiction. Overall I enjoyed the movie and thought it was well made. However, as the film built towards the ending, I kind of realized where it was going (the ending is similar to another movie, which I won't name here as it'll be a spoiler, will put it in the first comment on this post). Also, some of the characters and plot lines I felt, didn't get a satisfactory resolution. Nevertheless, it's well worth your time, certainly not a typical Telugu movie. I watched it at PVR Forum Mall, where the movie was shown with English subtitles. Stay till the end credits, for some behind the scenes footage. The title of the movie though written as "Awe", is closer to "Ah!", going by the Telugu alphabet. Which is the correct pronunciation? I drew Regina Cassandra as the junkie Meera from the movie. The last movie I watched of hers was "Maanagaram", and this is a completely different role for her. I did this with 0.5mm 2B pencil on Brustro sketchbook, and this is a scan. #325 / 27-Feb-18#reginacassandra #nani #telugu #chaibisket @chaibisket #DailyMovieSketch

[Pencil drawing of @actormaddy from @breatheamazon. I had posted an in-progress image earlier, thanks to Mr Madhavan for mentioning that on Twitter! This is the scanned version of the finished artwork. You can see @karthikabhiram for a photo of the drawing in my sketchbook, and the pencil that I drew it with.] Breathe (2018)Directed by Mayank SharmaI guess we in India are quite lucky, since a subscription to Amazon Prime Video is very reasonably priced here as compared to other parts of the world. Quite a few major regional movies have become available on this service very soon after their theatrical runs. And there is a growing selection of content created specifically for the service, of which "Breathe" is one. This is an 8 episode series of which 7 have been released so far. It stars Madhavan as family man Danny Mascarenhas, whose 6 year old son Josh is terminally ill, and will die unless he receives an organ transplant in a few months. Danny is a good man but will do anything it takes to save his son. When organ donors start turning up dead, alcoholic cop Kabir (Amit Sadh) suspects Danny. The show is well made with good production value and cinematography (IMDb says they used the RED Helium 8K camera on this production). However, I feel the story and direction could have been a little bit more nuanced and subtle. There were some things that really required suspension of disbelief in the first few episodes, and Amit Sadh's character was quite unlikeable in the first few episodes as well. Madhavan though, with his performance elevated it to another level, but I did get a feeling sometimes that he was an actor of a higher caliber than the material. If it sounds like I didn't enjoy the series, that's not so, it's just that I had these minor issues with the first few episodes. But the show kept building the tension well and the last couple of episodes were really good. I would definitely recommend watching the show. I'll update this post once I have seen the entire thing.I drew Madhavan as Danny from the show, it was done with 0.5mm 2B pencil on Brustro A5 sketchbook.#324 / 19-Feb-18#breathe #amazon #DailyMovieSketch #pencil #madhavan #actormaddy
