So I did, late last night / early this morning.The movie was awesome, I loved it and you can see what I had to say about it in the previous post with the drawing of Ranveer. If there was one person whose screen presence equalled or beat Ranveer's in the movie, it was Siddhant, as MC Sher. Gully Boy (2019)Directed by Zoya AkhtarI watched "Gully Boy" a few days back and absolutely loved it.The movie stars Ranveer Singh as Murad, a young man from the slums of Dharavi, who has been inspired by rap music and rappers, and writes his own rhymes. Seeing MC Sher (Siddhant Chaturvedi) perform at his college introduces him to the Mumbai street rap scene. Under Sher's wing, Murad is spurred to realise his dreams as an artist, despite his abusive father and his background of poverty. Alia Bhatt stars as Murad's girlfriend Safina, a medical student and the person in his life who stands by him. Although you know how this will end, the joy of the movie is in its storytelling and seeing the journey of Murad.The movie is excellently made – among its many standout aspects are the characterisation and storytelling, the cinematography by Jay Oza, the acting (everyone is on their best game here, Ranveer is brilliant as is Siddhant Chaturvedi in a fantastic breakout performance, my favourite character), and the music. The rap battles, the impromptu performances with beatboxing, and the later more professionally produced songs are all superb, with beats that energise the audience. The soundtrack apparently has upwards of 50 artists who contributed to it.I watched the 11 PM show – even at 2:30 AM, once the movie got over, it had the effect of leaving one exhilarated. Like "Sultan" a few years back, where I was wishing for few more MMA fight scenes, I wouldn't mind seeing an extended cut of this movie featuring even more music scenes!The first entry to my "Best Movies of 2019" list! After 15 to 20 hours of work, I’m very happy to present to you my yearly roundup of 2018’s best and awaited movies of 2019. I’d been very busy with work of late, so this art is coming in February instead of at the beginning of the year. It was all done with a single 0.5mm 2B mechanical pencil on A5 Canson paper sketch pad, and this is a scan. Each drawing is one inch square in size. I kept spraying fixative on each row once it was complete, so as not to smudge the artwork. The image can be viewed upside down as well and is being posted on @karthikabhiram and @dailymoviesketch, in each orientation. For last year’s artwork, I had made a t-shirt design available, the site I used then isn’t operational now, so have to find an alternative. Movies marked with * appear on the drawing. [Drawing of @actormaddy and @actorvijaysethupathi from #vikramvedha]Vikram Vedha (2017)Directed by Pushkar-GayatriI am late to watch this film but I’m glad I got to see it now! I enjoyed the movie very much. “Vikram Vedha” stars R Madhavan as cop Vikram. He is part of an encounter squad, on the hunt for the elusive gangster Vedha (Vijay Sethupathi). An encounter at the beginning of the film has Vikram’s squad gunning down several members of Vedha’s gang, after which Vedha surrenders to the police. The film is then structured as a series of incidents happening in the present time, and backstory in the form of flashbacks, told by Vedha. The movie has an engaging screenplay and a fast pace. Almost every scene in the movie and every event that takes place has some significance later on — there is no ‘fat’ or padding here. The moral dilemmas that are posed to the characters (and also the audience) when viewed from different perspectives are interesting. At the centre of the film is two powerhouse performances from the leads, whose characters are also written very well, another great protagonist-antagonist combination. The feel of the film almost reminds one of a 1980s/90s Hong Kong crime drama.Cinematography by P S Vinod is great, being shot digitally it has a pristine, crisp look and they’ve graded it to have this great desaturated, kind of brownish look. The movie definitely deserves all the praise it has gotten.I drew Madhavan and Vijay Sethupathi from the movie. Body Bags a.k.a. John Carpenter Presents Body Bags (1993)Directed by John Carpenter and Tobe HooperWhat a great title for a movie! In 1993, Showtime Network released "Body Bags", this anthology horror film (oh, how I love those), with three segments and a framing story.It begins with morgue worker John Carpenter commenting that bodies of people who died of natural causes aren't really interesting – however, when people die because of suicide or murder, their bodies come in these black body bags. And we then see stories about three of the corpses. The first one, "The Gas Station", features Anne (Alex Datcher from "Passenger 57") on the first day of her job on the night shift at a gas station, with a serial killer on the loose. The second, "Hair", is about Richard (Stacy Keach) who is balding, and will do anything to have a full head of hair. The third one, "Eye", is about Brent (Mark Hamill) who loses an eye in an accident, and gets a transplant, only to experience horrific visions.The first segment, directed by Carpenter, is the one I enjoyed the most, I thought it was effectively crafted and suspenseful. The second one, also by Carpenter, was a more comedic affair and I didn't like the ending ("They Live"-esque but not as effective). The third, directed by Tobe Hooper was good but kind of predictable.Overall though, I think it's nostalgia – they don't make movies like this anymore – I really loved watching this. It has a great cast, good acting and is fun. I loved the end credits music, by John Carpenter and Jim Lang. It reminded me of the "Big Trouble in Little China" song. Several cameos and familiar actors can be spotted in this. About a decade later, Showtime Network premiered their "Masters of Horror" series.I drew John Carpenter as the Coroner from the film, in the form of a 1990s style video poster on a matchbox (actual size)! This is because, @creativekumari started a #ckmatchboxseries of drawings and I thought I'll contribute one as well. Escape Room (2019)Directed by Adam RobitelI wasn't actually expecting to watch a movie this weekend, however went for "Escape Room" with my colleagues @radhaswamy_tallapally and Hari on impulse, on Friday night. Six strangers get an invite to participate in a complex Mystery / Escape Room, with the prize of $10,000 if they make it out. Once inside the Minos Escape Rooms building, they realise to their horror that they are trapped, and they are actually in life threatening situations.The Escape Room angle is a bit different, otherwise this really isn't anything we haven't seen before. It reminds one of the "Saw" movies, and also Vincenzo Natali's superb thriller "Cube". The execution of the movie is quite decent though, the visuals are good and it's easy to watch. As a PG-13 movie, the movie is kind of tame. The acting I felt could have been better, and the ending is something that really requires suspension of disbelief. Polar (2019)Directed by Jonas ÅkerlundA Netflix Original, this movie "Polar" is based on the graphic novel of the same name (itself a collection of a "silent" webcomic by Victor Santos). The movie features Mads Mikkelsen as the world's top assassin, Duncan Vizla, who is 14 days away from retirement. As per the rules of Damocles, the organisation he works for, when an assassin reaches the age of 50, they retire and are paid out their dues. His amounts to 8 million dollars, and Damocles boss Blut (Matt Lucas) decides it's cheaper just to get rid of him, and sends a squad of younger hitmen after him.This is an interesting enough concept, but nothing that we haven't seen before, especially after the "John Wick" movies. As always, Mads's presence in the movie elevates it to a whole another level. The director who has worked on a number of music videos, infuses the movie with style (the scenes with the hit squad feature a high-key, highly saturated grading).
