Avengers: Endgame (2019)Directed by Joe and Anthony RussoWith just a little over 40 days to go for this movie's release, there was the final trailer and poster that dropped completely by surprise, a few days ago. @emergencyawesome and @newrockstars and several others have done breakdowns for the trailer, and have picked apart nearly every frame of the footage. You have to appreciate the marketing of this movie, apparently the trailers are based only on the first 15 minutes of the movie, and there have been only two trailers and a TV spot released. While they do contain enough wow moments to build interest, they don't reveal details about the plot. Also, we really don't know if there was some footage shot only for the trailer that won't actually appear in the movie.April 26 can't get here fast enough!I drew Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow from the trailer. There are different hairstyles that you see for her in the trailer (the short blond hair, which means that takes place directly after Infinity War, longer hair, red hair and in a braid), which might indicate passage of time. I drew her with the braid. [#DrawWithMango × #DailyMovieSketch]The Mask (1994)Directed by Charles RussellSSSSSMOOOKIN'! A continuation of my series of 90s movie sketches, for @mangopenciler's #90snostalgia Art Challenge. Congrats to him, the #DrawWithMango hashtag has crossed 100 posts. Jim Carrey had three major hits in 1994 — "Ace Ventura: Pet Detective", "Dumb and Dumber", and this movie. "The Mask" comes from director Charles Russell, who delivered the successful "A Nightmare on Elm Street 3" for New Line Cinema. It's based on the Dark Horse comic series, about the Mask of Loki that gives the wearer superpowers, a considerably dark and violent set of stories.The movie has a lighter and more comedic tone, however, I still think this is the most serious out of the three mentioned Jim Carrey movies. He stars as meek bank clerk Staney Ipkiss, who comes into possession of the Mask, which turns him into a living cartoon, allows him to woo Tina (Cameron Diaz in her debut), and draws the attention of gangster Dorian (Peter Greene). At one point, it was supposed to be an R-rated thriller, and you can make out that undertone here. The movie is very well made, the Oscar nomiated visual effects still hold up today, it's fast paced and Jim Carrey gives it his all. The one liners are memorable and Max the Dog as Milo steals every scene that he's in.I haven't yet seen the sequel "Son of the Mask", which was a disappointment critically and commercially (it had around 4-5 times the budget of this movie though). I rewatched "The Mask" last night on @primevideoin and enjoyed it, I drew this sketch afterwards. [#DrawWithMango × #DailyMovieSketch]Cliffhanger (1993)Directed by Renny HarlinContinuing the series of 1990s movie drawings for @mangopenciler's #90snostalgia art challenge, here's a movie I am very fond of, from 1993. Sylvester Stallone had two hits this year, this movie and "Demolition Man". This was the year I remember, we got STAR TV (satellite television) at home and the latter film, I knew about through TV, this one was thanks to a videotape I bought and rewatched many times.Finnish director Renny Harlin shot to fame for making one of the well received "A Nightmare on Elm Street" sequels (Part 4), and then made "Die Hard 2" in 1990. I believe that one and this action thriller are his best work. I must watch "Mindhunters" from 2004 again, I remember that as being a good movie too. Some of his films are criticized for being too indulgent and overblown, but this Stallone movie is exciting and fun.Stallone stars as mountain rescue expert Gabe Walker, who retires from the job after an accident involving the death of his best friend Hal's girlfriend. Gabe and Hal respond to a distress call from stranded hikers only to find that the call was fake, the hikers are actually criminals led by the deliciously villainous Qualen (John Lithgow) who have lost three cases containing a million dollars in the mountains, and they make Gabe and Hal recover them. Can the heroes stay one step ahead and escape?The movie has spectacular action scenes and is very entertaining.Next is 1994 — there were many great movies that year, I've already drawn a sketch from "The Professional", watch out for one more. The drawing is scanned already and will be posted in a few hours. [#NoSpoilers]Captain Marvel (2019)Directed by Anna Boden and Ryan FleckThe Marvel Cinematic Universe's first female superhero led movie and the 21st entry in the series, "Captain Marvel" was released on International Women's Day in many parts of the world. I watched it yesterday in 3D and enjoyed it.Brie Larson stars as the title character, though never actually referred to by that name in the film itself. The movie sets up this conflict between the race of the Kree and the shapeshifting Skrulls, and as it opens, Larson's character Vers is a soldier with the Kree, having only flashes of memory that indicated she had a life on Earth. She gets stranded on Earth in 1995 and tries to piece together her past while working along with S.H.I.E.L.D. agent Nick Fury (Samuel L Jackson) to track down the Skrull infiltrators.It's an interesting way of telling an origin story and I liked the dynamic between Brie Larson and Samuel L Jackson most of all. The movie was engaging and I liked all the references to the other MCU movies (can't discuss them as they would be considered spoilers), the Stan Lee references and the two post credit scenes.The CGI de-aging on Nick Fury is amazing, the best visual effect of them all! Carol Danvers also wears an NIN shirt.Charlie of @emergencyawesome said it the best — this is solid mid-Marvel quality. Not up to the mark of the strong MCU entries but still good. I liked it and it only upped the interest for "Avengers: Endgame". Speaking of Endgame, I got to see the trailer in 3D, and the CBFC certificate called it the Capstone Trailer. That was apparently the codename for the trailer.I drew Goose the cat (actually, flerken) from the movie. Goose is a reference to "Top Gun". Goose was played by 3 professional cat actors in the movie apparently! While I didn't feel that he stole the show like some people said, I enjoyed the scenes featuring him. I was initially thinking to draw this using only Uni Pin and Gelly Roll, but added some ballpoint pen and colour pencil as well. Léon (1994)Directed by Luc BessonHappy International Women's Day!For @mangopenciler's #drawwithmango #90snostalgia Art Challenge, I have been making sketches of movies from the 1990s, one for each year in the decade. I planned the movies and the people to draw, but realised all were male!I will still go forward with all those I planned to draw, so this is an additional sketch for 1994 — a drawing of @natalieportman as Mathilda from Luc Besson's "Léon" a.k.a. "The Professional". She was 12 years old at the time she made her debut in this excellent action thriller, and seeing her acting here, it's no wonder she went on to do great things in the future.I had bought the videotape of "The Professional" in 1995, which was a shorter US version, but it was only several years later that I watched the longer International Version (or version intègrale), titled "Léon". A couple of days ago, I ordered this Bic Fine Multi Colour pen from Amazon and it was delivered yesterday, so I did this sketch with it. Inspired by @tamster_c and @nicolasvsanchez I tried blending colours (green and red for example can give you a brown), I'll need a lot more practice though. I used a little bit of Gelly Roll as well and the drawing was done on an A6 Brustro sketchbook. There is a photo of this drawing that I posted on my @karthikabhiram account. #422 / 8-Mar-19

[#DrawWithMango × #DailyMovieSketch]Police Story 3: Super Cop (1992)Directed by Stanley TongThird sketch in my series of 90s movies for @mangopenciler's #90snostalgia art challenge. This is the third "Police Story" movie and the first in the series not to be directed by Jackie Chan. Jackie is an undercover cop trying to take down drug lord Chaibat. Michelle Yeoh co-stars in the movie as an Interpol officer.I watched this movie in the theatre in the early 90s and I remember it fondly. For this drawing I actually rewatched it (on YouTube – both versions are available, more on this later, beware of the US version) and it's a terrific movie. At a brisk 95 min, the movie is fast paced. There is comedy but the central story and characters are treated seriously.The action scenes are fantastic with some amazing set pieces, and Michelle Yeoh proves to be Chan's equal in the fights. If you have not seen it in many years, you will enjoy rewatching it. And if you haven't seen it at all, you should. You can enjoy it even if you haven't seen the first two. Here are a few things about the movie – • The original version of the movie (on the film itself and even the posters) credits Michelle Yeoh as Michelle Khan, and that's how I saw it.• Quentin Tarantino considers this movie one of the best movies ever made since he started making movies. (For my 1992 sketch, I could've picked Tarantino's first, "Reservoir Dogs", but I drew that in 2016)• The movie was released in the US in 1996 as "Supercop". Like all the American versions of Jackie's movies released by Dimension Films, please stay away from that version. I think this film is not as severely affected as others but, the US version has an extremely cheap looking title sequence added, is cut by around 10 min, has cliched songs ("Kung Fu Fighting", really?) added and a replaced music score. Some of the movies have as much as 15 or 20 min cut. I can't bring myself to watch these versions! (Out of morbid curiosity, you can check for these on YouTube.) [#DrawWithMango × #DailyMovieSketch]Terminator 2: Judgment Day (1991)Directed by James CameronContinuing my series of #90snostalgia sketches, one for every year in the decade, for @mangopenciler's art challenge.One of the best sequels of all time – T2 is a landmark movie. It was one of the early films that use computer generated imagery for visual effects, winning an Oscar for that. I watched it some months ago and it still holds up well. The first two films are far better than the sequels that came out in subsequent years. There's a T6 coming up with James Cameron's blessing and Deadpool's Tim Miller involved, but I am not keeping any expectations. If it's good that'll be a pleasant surprise.What most of us would have watched in theatres or on videotape back then (in 1993 or 1994 I bought the tape and watched it many many times that the tape wore out) would've been the 136 min theatrical release, DVD / Blu-ray Extended editions run about 15 min longer. I also had bought a novelisation (remember those?) of the film by Randall Frakes, based on the script by James Cameron and William Wisher. You can find a PDF online of you look for it.I drew Schwarzenegger from the ending steel plant scene where he tells the T-1000, "Hasta la vista, baby". The drawing was done with the @ns1pen on A6 Brustro sketchbook. I also used a blue and red ballpoint pen, and Sakura Gelly Roll white pen on this. This is a scan. The reference image is from the theatrical trailer, which apparently used a different take of the scene than the one that ended up in the actual movie. [#DrawWithMango × #DailyMovieSketch]Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (1990)Directed by Steve BarronA couple of days back @mangopenciler and I were discussing about a lot of nostalgic things from the 90s. Yesterday, I also made a post on @karthikabhiram documenting this as well so do check that out. For the new #DrawWithMango challenge, the theme was decided as 90s Nostalgia. It's a wonderful theme and I decided that I'll draw a sketch covering one movie from each year in the decade. This is the first entry — from the 1990 movie adaptation of “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles”. I actually watched TMNT II and a few episodes of the cartoon on videotape, before watching this. TMNT II was one of the videos I had as a kid, and I must've watched that movie scores of times! Go Ninja Go Ninja Go! And in the early 90s when the TMNT show was aired on TV, I was a huge fan and watched every episode.Here are a couple of things you may not know about TMNT (more in comments): • The director, Steve Barron, made the A-Ha "Take On Me" music video.• This film and the two sequels were a New Line Cinema and Golden Harvest co production. You might remember the Golden Harvest logo from Jackie Chan movies of the 1980s and early 90s.• The Turtles' and Splinter's heads are all animatronic puppets, controlled by several operators. The puppet effects are fantastic and hold up so well even today, the characters have such lifelike expressions that it's hard to believe you're watching puppets.• The film takes inspiration from an early comic story arc.• The 1980s animated show theme song was co-written by Chuck Lorre, creator of "The Big Bang Theory"! I drew Raphael from the film, this is from an early scene where he comes out of a theatre having watched "Critters" (another New Line film, and another bit of 90s nostalgia), and says "Where do they come up with this stuff"! Alita: Battle Angel (2019)Directed by Robert RodriguezI watched "Alita: Battle Angel" in 3D 4DX on Sunday (first time I'm watching a movie in this format). While it was good to experience once, I think the extra effects were gimmicks and didn't add much to the experience of the movie, which was entertaining on its own. The movie is set in 2563 and opens with cyborg specialist Dr Dyson Ido (Christoph Waltz) discovering the head of a 300 year old cyborg (with a human brain) in a scrap heap. He gives it the cybernetic body of a teenage girl, and names her Alita. Alita can't remember anything about her past and doesn't know the present world, and through her, the audience surrogate, we are given exposition. Alita and Ido live in the Machine City, and the wealthy and privileged live in the Sky City of Zalem. We are introduced to the other characters that make up the world of the film, the sport of Motorball, the other antagonist cyborgs and the Big Bad, a character called Nova.The world building they've done here, is terrific. I love a good cyberpunk film and this is well executed (kind of reminded me of "Altered Carbon" and "Elysium", though those are very different). It has exceptional visuals and effects. I don't think the technology to accomplish this would have existed a few years before. The cyborg characters are entirely rendered in CG. Initially Alita with her big anime-style eyes takes some getting used to, but the effects are photorealistic enough that you accept it as being real. The acting from Rosa Salazar as Alita is great, and Christoph Waltz has such an amazing screen presence in anything he's in. This felt more like writer James Cameron's movie to me, than a Robert Rodriguez film. Nevertheless, I liked it a lot, and felt it was much better than what I was expecting. The movie sets up a lot of story threads to be resolved in a sequel (I hope the movie is successful enough that we get one). I liked the music score by Junkie XL (here credited as Tom Holkenborg).
