Black Mirror: "Rachel, Jack and Ashley Too" (2019)Directed by Anne SewitskyA couple of weeks back I watched the three episodes of Season 5 of "Black Mirror". The first two were good but I didn't think they were as good as some of the best episodes of the show. The third episode though, was in my opinion the strongest in the season, and was a good true "Black Mirror" episode. It stars Miley Cyrus as singer Ashley O, who is idolised by many including Rachel (Angourie Rice). There's even a doll version of her, called Ashley Too, which becomes Rachel's companion. The storyline then takes some darkly funny and twisted turns. It's very well made and acted, and the songs of Ashley O are all versions of songs by a band that I like a lot — I didn't know till I watched the episode so it came as a surprise to me, so I won't reveal it here either. I thought the episode was very cleverly done as a whole and I enjoyed it.I drew the Ashley Too doll, it was done with Bic multi colour ballpoint pen and Gelly Roll pen on A6 Brustro sketchbook and scanned.#dailymoviesketch #blackmirror #netflix #mileycyrus #ballpointpen #sketch #ink #penandink#452 / 30-Jun-19

[Drawing of @taapsee from @ashwin.saravanan's "Game Over"] Game Over (2019)Directed by Ashwin SaravananWatched this on Friday after hearing good things about it and it was very good! The movie has video game designer Swapna (Taapsee Pannu) confined at home after being raped a year ago, so traumatized by the incident that she has panic attacks in the dark. This being the setting, the film also introduces a plotline about women being killed in gruesome ways (beheaded and being set on fire). Won't get into further details but this is an original mix of different genres, the home invasion thriller and slasher being prime influences.I loved the movie. The opening titles sequence, the music, sound design, acting, and direction were all very good. The sound design and Ron Yohann's music were particularly effective here and contributed to the intensity of the movie! I watched it in AMB Cinemas in the hall that had Dolby Atmos setup, and I really enjoyed this aspect of the film. It's a taut thriller, very well crafted. Highly recommended!I watched the movie in Telugu, the Tamil version was not playing here. The Hindi version apparently has Anurag Kashyap's name associated with it as "Presented by" though it's not present in the version I saw.Surprisingly, the movie is rated U/A (our PG-13 equivalent) though it could have been an A rated movie easily, had they gone a little stronger with the violence.I drew Taapsee from the movie as Swapna, the drawing was done with @ns1pen and Gelly Roll pen on A6 Brustro sketchbook and scanned.#dailymoviesketch #gameover#451 / 25-Jun-19

X-Men: Dark Phoenix a.k.a. Dark Phoenix (2019)Directed by Simon KinbergI watched this movie some days back, and then had some work related travel and got busy, so couldn't complete this sketch earlier. The movie is set in 1992, and opens with the X-Men saving a group of astronauts from a malfunctioning shuttle, caused by what looks like a solar flare. This energy is semi-sentient apparently and attaches itself to Jean Grey (Sophie Turner), who absorbs it. When she come back she feels good, but this power enhances her abilities, and she is soon pursued by a race of aliens led by Jessica Chastain, who apparently want this power for themselves. The first half was pretty engaging but after the entire movie was over I felt it was just underwhelming. The acting is good but the characters and events just felt underdeveloped and small in scale. Hans Zimmer's music was nice and added some weight to the proceedings but I felt even he wasn't on his A game here, with some of the music cues sounding similar to what he's already done in his previous scores. The film suffers as a result of the reshoots and changes made in post production, with Jessica's character and the aliens just showing up without any proper introduction. There's only one major setpiece in the third act, where we see the X-Men working together.Overall I didn't dislike the movie, I just felt it was disappointing. The next day, I watched "Godzilla: King of the Monsters", here called "Godzilla II: King of the Monsters", and compared to that I actually liked this one better. "Godzilla" had visual effects that were nice to look at but the characters and the story were even less developed than here, and many times I felt characters and dialogue were just there to give exposition. None of the human or monster characters got enough development, and I just wasn't interested in what was going on. The on screen title for this movie is "X-Men: Dark Phoenix" as is the title on the poster here in India, whereas in the US I guess it's just called "Dark Phoenix". I drew Sophie Turner as Jean Grey with the Phoenix force, the drawing was done with @ns1pen on A6 Brustro sketchbook and scanned.#450 / 23-Jun-19

WIP drawing of Sophie Turner from "X-Men: Dark Phoenix". I watched this on Monday, and I watched "Godzilla II: King of the Monsters" on Tuesday. "Dark Phoenix" was the better of the two in my opinion. Both films though, suffered from having underdeveloped characters and story, and as a result, were disappointing. I'm busy with work till the next few days so I'll probably be able to complete this and post it only on Sunday. The notes written on the previous page are for the Photography Basics Session that I conducted earlier in the month. @ns1pen #ns1pen #google #pixel2xl #teampixel #karthikabhiram #DailyMovieSketch #darkphoenix #xmen #xmendarkphoenix #sansastark #sophieturner #jeangrey
