Alien: Covenant (2017)Directed by Ridley Scott [Birthday Special Drawing] "Alien: Covenant", initially titled "Alien: Paradise Lost", is the sequel to 2012's "Prometheus". That movie ended with the survivors of the "Prometheus" mission, Elizabeth Shaw (Noomi Rapace) and the synthetic human, David (Michael Fassbender), taking a ship to the homeworld of the Engineers, the aliens who created life on Earth.Fast forward 10 years later – the "Covenant", transporting 2000 colonists in stasis, is on its way to the planet Origae-6, seven years being left on their journey. Their trip is interrupted by a freak accident, which brings the small crew out of hibernation. The synthetic on board the "Covenant" is Walter (also played by Michael Fassbender). A mysterious transmission from a nearby planet, seemingly human in origin, makes the "Covenant" crew stop to take a look – what they find is a desolate paradise, inhabited by David. But is this place safe, or incredibly hostile?I liked "Alien: Covenant" better than "Prometheus". Like its predecessor, it has gorgeous and stunning visuals (same cinematographer – Dariusz Wolski). Fassbender owned the screen every time he was on it. I loved the interaction between the two synthetics and the themes reminiscent of "Blade Runner". As you'd have seen in the trailers, we do get to see the xenomorphs we all know and love. When it came to the Alien stuff, this movie did well, and one appreciated the good amount of blood and gore that was in this. This movie does answer some of the questions raised in "Prometheus" while raising some new ones. Looking forward to the next (one or two?) entries in the series, that'll bring this up to "Alien". There were several nods to "Alien" here, the way the titles appeared on the screen and the music (with themes from the original). We got to see the movie a week earlier than in the US, I watched it on Sunday. Overall I'd give it an 8/10, it was very well done. This is a sketch of Michelangelo's Statue of David. David, my favourite character from the film, takes his name from this Statue in the fascinating opening scene. #257 / 15-May-17

3 Breaking Bad posters. The layout is the same, and they all use my pencil drawing of Walter White / Heisenberg. I put some of my favourite dialogues from the show on these. This picture of Walter is based on one of the promotional images for Season 5. The series of portraits of the cast are interesting – they all appear to have been shot with a wide angle lens, giving an interesting (slightly distorted) look to the faces.

Breaking Bad (2008-2013) Created by Vince Gilligan I finished watching this incredible show on Netflix a couple of days back. "Breaking Bad" is one of the most critically acclaimed TV shows ever, and for good reason. The acting, writing, cinematography in the show are all fantastic. In the recent trailer released for "Alien: Covenant", there is a line from the poem "Ozymandias" by P B Shelley that can be heard. This was referenced in the graphic novel "Watchmen" as well, which is one of my all time favourite works in that genre. "Breaking Bad" Season 5 Episode 14 was also called "Ozymandias", and the trailer for the episode has Bryan Cranston reading out the poem. So, I thought I'd make a poster based on this. I drew Bryan Cranston as Walter White / Heisenberg, in pencil, scanned it, and then put together this poster in Photoshop. The logo is from Wikimedia, and the poem I took from Wikipedia. #256 / 10-May-17

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 (2017)Directed by James Gunn (@jamesgunn)The fifteenth entry in the Marvel Cinematic Universe was released on Friday in theatres here and I watched it yesterday. The movie picks up a few months after the first film and finds the Guardians on the run from the Sovereign (a race of gold skinned beings). They are rescued by a man who claims to be Star-Lord / Peter Quill's (Chris Pratt) father, and he takes them to his planet. Meanwhile, old friends and enemies are also after the Guardians and they must save the Galaxy again. It's difficult to discuss further details about the plot without giving away spoilers.Like the first movie, this is one of the more quirky MCU movies, a very personal kind of project for James Gunn. Unlike many of the other MCU movies, this one is rather self contained and doesn't really set up "Thor: Ragnarok" or even "Avengers: Infinity War", barring a few references to Thanos and events from the first movie. To me, this was slightly disappointing, as I expected more of Universe-building and a meatier plot. I also thought it took awhile to get to the main conflict. However, that being said, it's a very charming and fun movie, and had the audience laughing throughout. The characters were enjoyable to watch, and Baby Groot steals the show as you'd expect. The cinematography (they shot it in 8K, on the RED Weapon 8K system) and vibrant visuals were a treat, as was the music. There are some surprise cameos in the movie, and watch out for 5 mid/post credit sequences.I've drawn him before, but since he was such an adorable character in the movie, here's another sketch of Baby Groot. The next time we see Groot, in "Avengers: Infinity War", he will be full grown, since that movie will take place 4 years after the events of this one. Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope (1977)Directed by George Lucas This is a #StarWarsDay post, though, I'm posting it a day late. Of course, it's still May 4th in some parts of the world so it's OK I guess. #MayThe4thBeWithYouI have done several Star Wars sketches over the years, so was not sure of what to draw this time. I've drawn the major characters already. I thought I'd draw Max Rebo from the Max Rebo Band from "Return of the Jedi" (I like the song "Lapti Nek" featured in the original 1983 release, a lot). I finally decided to draw this Storm Trooper. The Imperial Storm Troopers are precise and accurate with their blasts, as Obi-Wan Kenobi explains to Luke Skywalker. But the way they are actually seen in the movies, they have bad aim Also, this is the Storm Trooper that Obi-Wan influences with his Jedi Mind Powers and says, "These aren't the droids you're looking for" when they arrive at Mos Eisley. Amour a.k.a. Love (2012)Directed by Michael HanekeI watched this movie last Friday, as part of a screening at Cinephiles Film Club. In April, all the movies screened were Best Foreign Language Film Oscar winners, and this French movie took the prize in 2013.The movie is about Georges (Jean-Louis Trintignant) and Anne (Emmanuelle Riva), an elderly couple, in their eighties. Anne experiences a sudden stroke, and undergoes a subsequent surgery that leaves her paralyzed on one side. The movie depicts how Georges cares for her, with her increasingly worsening health condition. Dramas are not my type of movie at all. So, I wasn't really looking forward to watching it, and was not expecting to like it at all. However, it turned out that this was one of the best movies I watched at the Film Club screenings. It's very well made, and superbly acted. The movie was very emotionally impactful and it has a very realistic depiction of love and how difficult it can be. It's well written and was engaging. Darius Khondji who shot David Fincher's "Se7en" is the cinematographer for this movie. This is a sketch of Emmanuelle Riva as Anne from the movie. At the age of 85, she was nominated for a Best Actress Oscar. The drawing was done in pencil and this is a scan. #253 / 3-May-17

Baahubali 2: The Conclusion (2017)Directed by S S Rajamouli [×× NO SPOILERS!! ××] I finally watched "Baahubali 2: The Conclusion" yesterday morning, at Ramakrishna 70mm at Abids (I wore my Kattappa artwork t-shirt while watching the movie – you can see @karthikabhiram for that post). The movie picks up from where the first one left off, and nicely wraps up all the storylines established there.I loved the acting, the music, the cinematography and the overall visuals. Like the first movie, this one contains some stunning imagery, and moments of great beauty (this sketch depicts one of those wow moments). It's epic and the action scenes are very stylised. I really liked the storytelling and the emotional impact they created. I thought this movie topped the first in practically every aspect.I do have some criticisms about it, the visual effects while of a high standard, are not up to par sometimes, which is kind of distracting. It's much better than the first part though. Also, when the action sequences are so stylised, you have to suspend disbelief quite a bit when characters are doing impossible stunts. They seemed to have rushed the conclusion in the third act strangely. A few minutes more would have helped there.Despite those, I really loved the movie, and I enjoyed it more than the first one. No one can fault the filmmakers for aiming really high. I'd say they pulled off most of what they wanted to achieve. Maybe if I watch it a second time I might focus more on the flaws and rate it a bit lower, but I enjoyed it so much on the first viewing that I'm rating it a 10/10.This is a sketch of Anushka Shetty (@anushkashettyofficial) as Devasena from the movie.
