I watched "The Suicide Squad" today in a theatre — the third this year, after "Tenet" and "Wonder Woman 1984" several months ago. I loved the movie!Unlike the studio interference that David Ayer faced for his 2016 "Suicide Squad", James Gunn had free reign to make the movie he wanted to, here. Like his "Guardians of the Galaxy" movies, this is also a film featuring a group of misfits on a mission! Task Force X, a team of criminals and villains imprisoned in the Belle Reve correctional facility are sent on a mission to the island of Corto Maltese. What follows is an epic, colourful, violent, fantastical action adventure that is very different from Ayer's movie (which I also really liked!) and also different from what you may expect from a movie in this genre. The movie stands on its own, story wise, hence it doesn't have to maintain continuity with the other DC Universe movies. It's not a reboot or a sequel, just its own thing. As can be expected, the movie has great music (the score by John Murphy as well as the songs). It has beautiful visuals — it was shot on IMAX certified RED cameras, and has a lovely look to it. The cast is terrific and the story was engaging, and does things to subvert expectations. The movie has a lot of humour and is surprisingly sweet at times (with Ratcatcher 2's character and the Sylvester Stallone-voiced King Shark). The R rating is utilised well and there are several moments of bloody violence and gore (I couldn't find a cut report but I think the version released in Indian theatres is uncut), and very creative and epic action. With the tone here, it really felt like a comic book to me, more so than other comic book based movies. Watch out for an interesting cameo. Overall I enjoyed it a lot and I think all involved had fun making this unique movie. The film is formatted in 1.9:1 aspect ratio but today, after the interval, the frame got punched in a bit to 2.39:1 (I suppose that's by mistake, the last slide in this post shows that). There was not much of a crowd which was a good thing (since now there's no alternate seating like was mandated a few months before).
