[#DailyMovieSketch × #Inktober]Total Recall (1990)Directed by Paul VerhoevenBased on the #Inktober2018 prompt word "swollen", I thought of "Total Recall", and the effect of decompression on people exposed to the Mars atmosphere, as depicted in the film (don't know whether it's scientifically accurate or not, but it's an example of the amazing effects that Rob Bottin and crew pulled off). The original "Total Recall" is fantastic, one of my favourite Schwarzenegger movies. A terrific blend of science fiction and action, a storyline involving memory implants, psychic mutants, rebellion, alien artifacts on Mars, blurring the lines between reality and dreams, all served with humour and several one liners, and lots of Paul Verhoeven's trademark splatter and extreme violence. The Academy Award winning visual and practical effects are amazing and still hold up today. I've always loved the brilliant orchestral but futuristic music score by Jerry Goldsmith (who himself regards it as his best work). I remember renting the videotape and watching it many times as a kid and on TV several years later. I always loved the futuristic designs and technology, the action and style, though when I was younger I remember being disgusted by some of the grotesque effects (the mutant Kuato, and the characters' eyes bulging out of their sockets). Years later someone pointed out that there are references to The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy in the film — wrapping a towel around your head to avoid capture, and a "triple breasted whore". Revisiting the movie is always rewarding and is a testament to how well made it is. They don't make them like they used to, I guess!There was a polished but instantly forgettable remake that came out in 2012, it can't compare to the original.I drew Ronny Cox as Cohaagen from the end of the movie. It was drawn with a black Bic ballpoint pen and a red ballpoint pen. I went overboard with the red pen so I did one more smaller drawing.
