Punisher: War Zone (2008)Directed by Lexi AlexanderI was watching a video about the different on-screen versions of Marvel's "Punisher" character, and that made reference to this 2008 movie. I was aware of this movie's release all those years ago, and especially remember reading about its director, Lexi Alexander, who is a martial artist and from a stunts background herself. However I never watched it back then, and the movie didn't do well on release either. I realised it's on Netflix so I watched it yesterday. The movie has Ray Stevenson in the role of Frank Castle a.k.a. the vigilante Punisher, who has no issues with brutally dispatching bad guys. Here, we see him go up against some gangsters one of which ends up becoming the villain Jigsaw. My reaction to the movie was very mixed. The thing which I felt didn't work, was the tone. The characters, especially the villains, were exaggerated and played like caricatures, like something you'd see in a kids cartoon. Yet, the movie has glorious R-rated bloodshed and violence, with people getting decapitated, heads blown off, and so on. The movie is very stylised with bold exaggerated colours, yellows, blues, greens in the frame. I realise this was a choice but to me it seemed a bit garish. Many of the characters were underdeveloped. I liked some of the visuals and the fact that they didn't tone down the violence, but the other aspects of the movie didn't work for me. Still I am happy that I watched it. The best Punisher in my opinion would be the one played by Jon Bernthal in the Netflix Marvel Television incarnation.I drew The Punisher, the drawing was done with 0.5mm 4B mechanical pencil on A7 @menorah.stationery sketchbook.
