John Wick Chapter 3: Parabellum (2019)Directed by Chad StahelskiI watched this third chapter in the "John Wick" series twice over the last few days. The movie is awesome! It picks up 10 minutes after Chapter 2 – with Wick on the run, a bounty of $14 million on his head, and hitmen all over the world after his life. He has been ex-communicated from the secret society of assassins after breaking a rule, and must fight to stay alive. The ensuing two hours+ are almost entirely action, and brilliant set pieces at that.I love the way these movies appear to be happening in an alternate, almost fantasy-type reality. I loved the comic book-ish feel of it, and the world building flows nicely from Part 2. It has an engaging story, a fast pace, is well acted by all and is very entertaining. I loved the cinematography, the set design and the music as well. The action scenes deserve to be talked about separately! If one was wondering how they would top Part 2, it’s as if they said, “hold my beer”, and proceeded to show precisely how! Action is shot wide, with less camera movement and cutting, which puts one in awe of what the stunt team and the actors pulled off here. Massive respect for Keanu Reeves and for that matter the entire cast, who are actually performing most of their own martial arts and stunts.Like oldschool martial arts movies, “Parabellum” has extended fight scenes with long takes, and is probably the most un-Hollywood Hollywood action movie in recent memory! After so many years of action movies, it’s difficult to show us something we haven’t seen before – but they did just that. The violence is strong but artistic, and will leave you with a big grin on your face, seeing the creative ways they came up with, of killing people! I am reminded of “The Raid” movies (for the very high standard of action), and there’s even a nice scene with Cecep Arif Rahman and Yayan Ruhian from those films fighting Wick. You literally can’t ask for anything more from a movie like this, it’s done with utmost respect to action fans. Certainly, along with “Avengers: Endgame”, this is another entry into my Best Movies of 2019 list. [More in first comment]#447 / 19-May-19
