Kong: Skull Island (2017)Directed by Jordan Vogt-RobertsI missed this movie when it came out in theatres, saw it a few days ago on Amazon Prime. This is the second entry in Legendary Pictures' "MonsterVerse", after 2014's "Godzilla" (I remember that movie was pretty good, though I don't remember the movie itself and just watched this one as a standalone film). The story concerns Randa (John Goodman) from the Monarch Corporation, who travels to an uncharted and hidden island along with a team of scientists and soldiers, and discovers monsters. The seismic charges they drop to map the island wake up Kong – who is king on the island, but also a bigger threat.The movie I thought was very entertaining. It was a lot better than I expected. The actors all did a good job, the production design (Futura typeface used in the movie and in the credits) was aesthetic, the cinematography (by Larry Fong, who shot "300", "Watchmen", "Batman v Superman") was great. I enjoyed the look of the movie, with its saturated yellows and greens. There were some showoffy camera moves and shots which were also nicely pulled off. I liked the music choices too. The visual effects were also terrific. The only criticism I have is that the story is rather straightforward (there's a setup and the movie follows through, nothing really unexpected or out of the ordinary). But that doesn't take away from the overall experience. Well worth watching.I drew Brie Larson as Mason Weaver, the photojournalist who joins the expedition. The camera she uses in the film is apparently a rare Leica KE-7A military version. From what I could see online it either has a 50mm f2 or a 35mm f2.8 lens.
