Pacific Rim Uprising (2018)Directed by Steven S DeKnight2013's "Pacific Rim" was Guillermo del Toro's loving homage to movies featuring giant robots and monsters – the plot had alien creatures entering our world through an interdimensional portal deep within the Pacific Ocean. To fight these Kaiju, humanity builds giant robots called Jaegers, operated by two pilots. The sequel, directed by "Daredevil" showrunner Steven S DeKnight, takes place 10 years after humanity won the war against the Kaiju and sealed the Breach. Jake Pentecost (John Boyega), son of Stacker Pentecost (Idris Elba's character from Part 1), now scavenges and sells Jaeger parts. A run-in with 15 year old Amara (Cailee Spaeny) results in them getting enlisted into the Defence Corps, and after a rogue Jaeger attack, they realize that the alien race behind the Kaijus – the Precursors –  are still a threat to humanity's existence. I enjoyed this sequel more than I thought I would. While it does not compare with the original (more on that later), it was quite entertaining and the action scenes were nicely done. John Boyega and Cailee Spaeny were extremely likeable in their roles. I also appreciated the ideas that they tried to bring in. However, the world building and development of the Kaijus and Jaegers weren't as good as in the first movie. The last third of the movie felt very rushed. They shot this in 2.39:1 as opposed to 1.85, I felt the more taller aspect ratio suited this kind of movie better. The music is serviceable but I really missed Ramin Djawadi's epic theme. They only played it twice in the entire film. I re watched the first one on Netflix (it's there on Amazon Prime as well), and it was superior. Del Toro sure loves his creatures and one can make out the effort that went into conceptualising them and putting them up on screen. It's not as involved here. I drew Cailee Spaeny as Amara. She was one of the best things about the movie. The drawing was done with 0.5mm 2B pencil and @Prismacolor pencils on Brustro sketchbook and scanned. #331 / 25-Mar-18#pacificrim #pacificrimuprising #caileespaeny #guillermodeltoro #kaiju #jaeger
